techbros learning how a thermos works by blowing up a trillion dollars worth of shit in space
It is intensely funny to me that tech bro CEOs on an annual salary of 15 petabillion dollars think data centres can go in space because it's very cold but actually they would get obscenely hot because heat won't radiate into the vacuum of space

An economist can correct me if I’m wrong, but as I understand it, the system as *designed* REQUIRES ~4-5% unemployment.

It then punishes those people for being unemployed, including a payment so low it actively hinders seeking employment.

Then blames them for being unemployed.

DARVO as policy.

HEY FRIENDS!! Did you know that Australia - #2 in the world for data centre investment - is now formally missing its climate targets thanks in large part to the resulting surge in power demand?

It's massive news - @crikey.com.au let me NERD OUT to explain why:

So thrilled to be a part of the important volume. The “critical” in “critical infrastructure” describes an analytical disposition but I think it also gestures at the sense of something crucial that shapes so much of what is possible in the digital worlds we inhabit.

Just imagining how much better it would be if ALL news stories about vaccine-preventable illnesses were illustrated with pictures of people with the disease, not pictures of needle injections. If you must show something that people will find scary & unpleasant, make it the disease, not the cure.
I'm so tired of measles.

I'm also tired of people using needle shots on stories like this.

Show what measles looks like.

The declaration of central Melbourne as a "designated area" for 6 months is a disturbing overreach. This declaration gives police extraordinary powers to stop and search people without a warrant, or even reasonable grounds - and over an unprecedented area and timeframe 🧵(1/3)

It's staggeringly unlikely this stupid power will ever be used.

Congratulations to the Albanese Government and @tanyaplibersekmp.bsky.social for embarrassing themselves, for insulting the welfare and legal sectors, and wasting everyone's time for no public or political benefit whatsoever.
Sadly, they cut a deal with the Libs to indeed rush this through

Interesting thread on how the impact of AI on the job market is both terrible (creative industries are hit hardest) and negligible (overall AI is not creating employment efficiencies).
How is AI *really* impacting jobs?

Henley Chiu, the CTO of Revealera, a jobs data analysis firm, analyzed 180 million jobs listings in 2024 and 2025, in an effort to find out. Chiu found an:

-8% drop in all jobs postings
-~30% drop in art, photography, writing jobs
-22% drop in journalism jobs
What’s really going on with AI and jobs?
Record-breaking layoff reports, Amazon's mass firings, and a slump in entry level employment. Is AI behind it all?
