As a reminder, when Biden announced student loan forgiveness—based upon a statute passed by Congress which explicitly said the President could do exactly that—Douthat called it "semi-Caesarist" because it was done "without consulting Congress."

The post from the Reagan Foundation is just complete gibberish.

The ad did not, in fact, misrepresent Reagan's views. But the idea that anyone needs the Reagan Foundation's goddamn permission to use the publicly broadcast official remarks of a former president and/or edit them for brevity is crazy

I’m sorry, why are we using “critics accuse” language here? These are factually, unambiguously, extrajudicial killings. It’s not an opinion. It’s not a disputed or disputable claim.

the degree to which people nominally affiliated with the democratic party have decided that embracing misogyny is Good Politics probably shouldn't have surprised me, but it still has
i think i would honestly find this whole discourse more tolerable if people simply said what they were actually saying, which is that they think the Democratic Party is too associated with femininity (and secondarily, with black people) and that they want to correct this

So much of "cancel culture" discourse is a re-description of the normal functioning of a democracy and public discourse by people who didn't like the results of one, or both, or how it made them feel.
Saying that someone doesn’t deserve to be a senator isn’t canceling them, that is the public opinion candidates are subject to in a democracy.

Quote from Timothy Mellon, who donated $130 million to the U.S. military, so you know who we’re dealing with:

“Black people, in spite of heroic efforts by the "Establishment" to right the wrongs of the past, became even more belligerent and unwilling to pitch in to improve their own situations”.

Relatedly, I think we underrate the extent to which Trump is a fully normal politician to young people. There's an abstract awareness that he represents a break from the past, but they don't personally remember it. This year's college freshmen were born in 2006-2007.
I think the Reagan ad is most effective not by the topic but by reminding everyone that presidents don't have to sound like insane morons.

Reagan's approach to the world prominently featured two things:

1) Russian aggression bad, Western democratic alliance good
2) Free trade good, tariffs and other barriers to trade bad

Pretending it's the opposite is the sort of reality inversion only someone who rejects truth itself could buy.

It's odd for me to realize that my first-year undergraduates are at an age where they don't really remember that there was a form of US politics prior to Donald Trump. For them, Trump is not an aberration from the normal course of political discourse, but just how US politics is done.

I’m very happy, and proud of my fellow Americans, at how many (though not enough) are reacting to ICE abuses. I’m also scared for them, because I think this escalates to more government (and government-supporter) violence, to a tipping point.
It's hard to overstate how fully engaged Chicago and the surrounding suburbs are in this ICE madness. There are neighborhood watch alerts, spontaneous crowds gathering outside schools at pick up & drop off plus madly blowing whistles and honking car horns, this city is fighting back and hard.

Any Reagan Foundation staff, and any lawyers who help them, should be named and humiliated into the Stone Age, made socially and legally radioactive, if they try any bullshit.

Remember: Vance knows this. Because he could just ASK HIS FUCKING IN-LAWS. But he doesn’t think they’re people.
In the aftermath of 9/11 it was dangerous to be brown in public. People were assaulted, shot and even killed for being or looking like Muslims/Arabs in the eyes of chuds around the country. This included Sikhs as in the murder of Balbir Singh Sodhi.

Here in Seattle, furloughed NOAA employees were out in the pouring rain cleaning up beaches yesterday, part of a national week of service organized by federal workers who can't do their jobs due to the shutdown.

Story by @heyjohnryan.bsky.social at KUOW, our federally defunded public radio station.

Pro-Israel talking points are basically contingent upon you never reading about anything that has ever happened. It is not like we revolted against the British in 1936, or were immediately suppressed politically by the Jordanians from 48 to 67 or engaged in civil war in 71, or fought Egypt in Gaza.

I haven’t seen anyone talk about how Jane Doe - an Epstein survivor - just sued the Bank of New York Mellon for funding Epstein and failing to file a Suspicious Activity Report. A Mellon heir is the one who gave $130M to pay the troops. Seems bribey to me.
