Because capitalism. Capitalism depends on people being wasteful. Spending money they don't have to buy shit they don't need. And the more wasteful shit they buy, the better. It's exactly how all these genocidal corporations like it.
It's not just "consumer smart" it reduces environmental waste, key materials are often mined in slave conditions. The whole tenor of the article is wrong - why is the economy so dependent on us engaging in mass waste?
