Their dismantling of the (scant) protections built into the immigration system points in a similar direction: they know little and want to know less about the people they hound and brutalize. Take the case in SF of an immigration judge fired mid-hearing by email: www.sfchronicle.com/sf/article/j...

Diese Geschichte ist unfassbar.

to be clear, it has become v common (i’d say the norm at this stage) to use llms for large scale text classification so this paper is not an outlier…still, no matter how normative this has become, it remains the fact that the use of llms this way undermines the validity & credibility of the results

King, I guess?
So a while back I was commissioned to do short bios of various rock stars, and they were just about universally total psychopaths, with the huge exception of Freddie Mercury. A lovely man who did good by his wife, his lovers, and his cats.
Today (24 November) marks the passing of Freddie Mercury, lead vocalist and pianist of the rock band Queen. He remains regarded as one of the greatest singers in the history of rock music.

It's weird to not only have lived through an information revolution but also now living through its undoing, all within less than a generation.
Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea

NEWS --> BBC confirms to me that they did edit a line out of historian @rutgerbregman.com's speech. It called Trump "the most openly corrupt president in US history."

BBC also confirms this was done on the advice of lawyers. So Trump's threats worked.

Trump’s Fury at BBC Gets Unnerving Results with Pro-MAGA Edit Stunner
First, British Broadcasting Corporation execs resigned after Trump complained about a segment. Now the BBC edited out a line from a historian that was critical of Trump. Where does this end?

One of the creepier geology papers I've read was about how in the end-Permian mass extinction (which is characterized by extreme volcanic CO2 outgassing and warming) the actual kill mechanism might have been when pulses of sulfur aerosols masking the warming rained out and the temperature spiked
A lot of people are going to lose money on this. Solar radiation modification only makes sense if followed by large-scale carbon dioxide removal, and we ain't got that.
A 25-person startup is developing technology to block the sun and turn down the planet’s thermostat.

The stakes are huge — and the company and its critics say regulations need to catch up.

There's a reason why major social media platforms, including Twitter pre-Elon, spent time and resources on "countering foreign influence" or "coordinated inauthentic behavior."

But then Tai bi, Shellenberger, Weiss, Benz, and Jordan showed up claiming that was the "censorship industrial complex"
NEWS: I spent the past 24 hours going through major MAGA accounts on Twitter, and a bombshell development has become clear: most of the right-wing ecosphere is being fed propaganda from foreign actors.
