The part that I can't figure out is what John Roberts thinks he is doing. He used to seem to be a judge who was very attentive to appearances, I think on a theory that you can't draw too much attention to yourself without undermining your ability to continue to shape the law.

I don’t think this is bad advice really, I just think it’s very difficult to understand what it means unless you’re already successfully following it. People who are uncomfortable with themselves are usually performing for others but urging any change just makes them try to refine the performance
