I've been consciously trying to do more retweeting of folks with Good And Thoughtful Takes around AI and the like lately, so here's a starter-pack thing I'll definitely not forget to keep updated later 🫡

what would you do if cats were extremely dedicated to eating pizza, do you ever think about that

like. you're in a pizza hut. it's after dark. suddenly, a shiver runs down your spine. did you just hear a claw tap on the glass? you did. it's a cat. no wait, hundreds of cats. they're coming in

a solid 75% of all public Grok replies on twitter right now are illegal or probably-illegal porn edits of women's photos

the fact that you'd only hear it from political pundits and not self-proclaimed "AI safety" people is kind of an indictment of the project

unfortunate to have objectively the best year of my life coincide with maybe the worst year for America in my lifetime

OpenAI has been openly chasing regulatory capture for years; even back in 2023 Altman was going around talking about requiring licensing if you use too many FLOPS to calculate something - absolute fucking sicko shit
one thing that drives me crazy about this whole thing is that OpenAI would love nothing _more_ than “regulations”. Regulatory capture is a thing!

even pessimistic accounting of GPU depreciation costs never really seem that bad until you get to OpenAI territory

having now seen firsthand what a group of clever people can do with like 0.1% of their capacity for a month really makes you wonder about the scale of waste that must go on there

something nonhuman emailed this guy of its own volition to express its appreciation (whether "real" or not) for his work and rather than anything resembling interest or wonder he goes on am unhinged rant on social media

how sad
Fuck you people. Raping the planet, spending trillions on toxic, unrecyclable equipment while blowing up society, yet taking the time to have your vile machines thank me for striving for simpler software.

Just fuck you. Fuck you all.

I can't remember the last time I was this angry.

the most important feature of the USS Defiant is that it strategically positions the helipad at the lowest point on the ship, so the gigantic waves produced when it moves splash onto it

this ensures that all helicopters can land on their preferred surface of wet, smooth steel

honestly weirdly despite posting about AI and my work with it a lot basically nobody has said shitty things in my replies. maybe because nobody replies to them either way but still

this mistake is kind of interesting from a philosophical standpoint

you'd have to believe on some level that the thing an object does "naturally", like talking for humans, requires no justification. "unnatural" behaviors for objects, like a computer talking, requires this absurd level of rigor
The context is this. I think you could squint and see it like that but to me it's just demanding an impossible standard around full combinatorial sampling of any possible space.

the irony is that "gentrifier" is a pejorative mostly used by people who are demanding legal reforms grant them permanent rent of some kind for either 1) doing nothing, 2) doing the unnecessary, or 3) owning land, or being located in a certain place -- ie, people demanding to be made gentry

does anyone actually have any instances of ChatGPT or similar mainstream LLM services being advertised as capable of doing "everything"?

it occurred to me recently that I do not actually know what marketing people are referring to when they say it was "marketed as being able to do everything"
