"Harder to justify putting money into your writing career" sounds like capitalist guilt trying to tell you art isn't real work. The operative word there, though, is "career." As in all things: care and moderation.

I was a freelancer when the ACA was approved. I've continued to be on the ACA exchanges since. It's quite liberating in some ways.
