TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

Whoa … this is really strange.

Federal law enforcement managed to confiscate almost two tons of cocaine, and arrest 3 suspects, without blowing the boat out of the water or killing anyone.

Frank Gehry, known for ebullient cultural buildings like Disney Hall who helped invigorate the field of architecture at a moribund time, has died at 96.

Reminder: This vast consolidation of wealth and power at the top has not been due to neutral market forces.

There’s no such thing as a “free market.”

It is designed.

It either advances public purposes or it serves the monied interests.

RIP Frank Gehry. Spent a lot of time in his shopping center and often visited his Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA. I sometimes walked passed his house in Santa Monica. Was nice feeling so close to great architecture.

This is 100% correct. The people running this country right now believe that the arts are as much a liberal indoctrination mechanism as they believe academia to be. They hate anything they can't control, anything that promotes creative and independent thought.
It's hard to even talk about the crushing losses in arts funding this year while the broader context of the world is so horrifically violent. But if you look at all of this as a struggle — either FOR or AGAINST hope and humanity — it becomes clear that the arts are in fact a key part of that story.

Writing is NOT a windfall generator.

Far over 90% of writers will just break even on what they write or even write at a loss.

A short few will make just enough to live on.
Very few will make bank.

In all cases this process is long and difficult.
