I am so stoked about this. I could moan about some details, and how an enduring service must run multiple times a day, but simply having an operator prepared to run this in such a hostile car-centric environment is such a step up from having nothing for over two decades—I’m thrilled. We need this!

I've covered this in the piece but TLDR:

- there is a legal definition of 'age restricted social media platform'
- esafety doesn't decide who fits the definition, but it does have enforcement powers
- esafety says only its list of 10 platforms in the ban have to worry about the ban ATM

This goes so far beyond merely separating church and state. Canada being Canada, and Quebec being Quebec, the CCRF will legalise euthanasia through the courts while being completely powerless when the legislature says the magic word "notwithstanding"
Quebec is launching an unprecedented attack towards all forms of organized religion.

According to the CBC, the CAQ government has also invoked the notwithstanding clause pre-emptively, shielding it from challenges under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

putting together documents ahead of @greatercanberra.org.au's AGM on Saturday, and it's very satisfying to be reminded that in spite of how many goals we've failed at or neglected to do, we've done so much that I've actually forgotten half of it

The workers affected by this should all be paid a bonus for impact on mental wellbeing
The ACT govt told them their jobs would end at Christmas. It was an 'administrative error'
Housing ACT apologises for the distress caused by its 'administrative error'.

My possibly-unpopular-on-this-platform hot take is that regardless of the merits of the age limit as a policy, a successful constitutional challenge would make it far harder, legally or at least politically, to do many other kinds of substantial regulation around big tech companies

As an Australian it astounds me that the UK justice system still, in 2025, runs off the back of lay magistrates
though again remember that magistrates are just volunteers without any legal training! which makes an automatic right to retrial more tenable.

I never enjoy the weird interrugnum in the lead up to the end of a year, where everything is somehow busy and quiet all at once, and there's a social expectation that This Is The Fun Season. this year the dread feeling has arrived way early.

KDE 3.5 was the peak of human civilisation, nowadays I still use KDE but more out of familiarity and a sense of loyalty which lets me overlook how broken it can get
KDE is simply broken software lol

It sucks that copyright law is the hammer that people have which creates the most obvious private rights of action and negotiating leverage against gen AI companies, when it also won't successfully address any of the longer-term economic impacts
It sucks that gen AI excesses have negatively polarized people into wanting even more restrictive copyright regimes than what we have now

I love this sort of post where "this country" could be pretty much anywhere. Does she commute to central London from somewhere in Kent? Has she tried to get from New York to LA by rail? Has she got a sore back from the overnight train from Sydney to Brisbane? Maybe Berlin to Dresden wasn't much fun?
