seriously, it appears that while basically nobody is reading fiction anymore when it comes to 90% of genres of literature, a lot of very horny people must be spending a lot of money on romance novels

And here’s the thing: basically nobody *identifies* as a misogynist. You don’t have to be like “Damn, I really hate women.” It’s baked in. And we just don’t see it. It’s something we all get to wrestle with, not just some heinous villains over there.
