A new article of mine is out now in VAN Magazine! It's about BBC Radio 3 Unwind, ambient music, and the strange ideas imposed on it from the outside by both the wellness industry and the reactionaries of the classical music world.
Lastly, Tim Lutton makes a case for ambient music; tracking the insidious ways Wellness Culture™ and algorithmic music discovery have appropriated the genre for ✨healing✨, and arguing for its capacity to hold tension and offer alternative modes of listening: van-magazine.com/mag/unwind-a...
Unwind, Unwound
Taken to orchestral concerts as a child, I was restless. The complexity and vast architectures of a typical Romantic symphony made me think of the music as some fractal maze, wholly illegible in its e...

what is a skyscraper?

a skyscraper is a tall office building with a spire, which, being secular and godless, scrapes against the Lord's own firmament, making a horrible nails on chalkboard noise for a full year until a groove is carved into it

The BBC is becoming a flat out dangerous institution for trans people. Robin is putting a lot of other presenters to shame by openly speaking out.

Not only is our Chancellor giving full-throated support to a genocidal and apartheid state, my local MP @sarahsackman.bsky.social was in attendance. You are a moral void and I can't wait for you to be voted out as soon as possible.

Fascist epistemology is intuitive, not empirical. It's historiography, mythic. Both of which turn on an aggressive investment in literal Christian eschatology. But even that doesn’t convey just how delirious this has become

'people are being denied a social home due to fears they will not be able to keep up with their living costs, and the report found 71% of housing associations said the benefit restrictions were a key reason for this.'
This has been happening for years, certainly for as long as I've been in the sector. It gives the lie to claims by the right that our welfare system is too generous. Regardless, I'm glad this research is out.

And I dream of another
Soul dressed in different clothes:
It burns and runs across
From timidity to hope,
With fire that leaves the earth,
Like spirit without a shadow,
Leaving a bunch of lilac
On the table for remembrance.

Awful. Solidarity with all those affected.

The Budget did absolutely fuck all for the arts and I fear we'll see more stories like this over the coming months.
Bosses at the Royal Shakespeare Company are proposing to cut its number of employees by 11% and reduce the pay for some of those who remain.
