Ackshully it’s an alpaca - there, I did it for you
For no particular reason, I’m reminded today over the way in which the Ice Queen in Narnia mocked the dead body of Aslan.

When you read that, it seems almost cartoonishly evil and then real life holds up a mirror.

Even more incredible what these folks tell themselves they are doing at the Nazi Bar.

My dude, you're not trying to "combat the dangerousness of the right" at the Nazi Bar. You're marinating your brain in it & endorsing the repeal of birthright citizenship. Just own it, please.

Best / only good defence of staying on Xitter that I’ve seen. Hat tip
A quick sidenote about this; one reason I stay on X is specifically because of exchanges like this, where @davidjbier.bsky.social and I got a prominent government official to make a claim so outrageous that it’s now ricocheting around the internet and actively undermining official PR campaigns.
Bovino, the man overseeing mass deportations, publicly declared that we must all have our papers on us, at all times, or we could be stopped, harassed, kidnapped, and detained, as they did with the man in this case, who is a US citizen.

The Democratic Party's formula for the last 50 years has been "Let's be friendly with extreme wealth and maybe we can also get modest policy wins sometimes." The last 10 years and this year in particular should be conclusive proof of how badly this has failed. But we're stuck with it anyway

Earlier this week, 42 state attorneys general sent a warning letter to the major AI companies regarding the dangers and harms created by AI chatbots. It's as forceful an indictment of what's happening that I've found, so here's a short thread to walk you through the evidence they've compiled... 🧵

Microsoft, Meta, Google and Apple were among the 13 companies that received a warning from a bipartisan group of state attorneys general, according to a letter from the state leaders, who said their c...

Honestly, I have never gotten the appeal of wrestling. So many close friends love it (and good for them!) but I end up sitting there like a dog being shown a card trick. It’s not sport, and it’s not theatre but some uncanny valley in between.

Informative thread and as @robfordmancs.bsky.social says, a variation of this stat appears every year. The underlying point around wealth inequality is unarguable, but flattening the issue in the way this study does isn’t necessarily all that helpful IMO
This is ringing bells as one of those extremely misleading stats that has been regularly debunked by more or less etc.

Good things are possible with conviction and charisma and strength. The good politicians I've seen in my lifetime — Obama, AOC, Mamdani — basically ignored the Overton Window and created new conversations that shaped better outcomes. There might be a time to be transactional, but it's not now.

I remember the kids who made "jokey" Hitler salutes in school. They were utter cunts in every other aspect of their personalities, too.

It's not an excuse, it's a confession.
You know I actually find it really intriguing that a bunch of British upper class people are coming out of the closet to admit that as children they made "jokey" Hitler salutes, because I was once (if in another country) the child on the receiving end of that kind of "jokey" antisemitism.

I do not think this claim is the defence you think (and from my vantage point of a different class and a decade later, any obsession was about Hitler being *bad*, which doesn’t really gel with his claimed actions)

The Essential Calvin & Hobbes. First one I owned and still hugely treasured. My daughter is just discovering Calvin and seeing her reading it is such a joy
omg. Kat Abughazaleh just posted that if she's elected, she'll swear in on a copy of Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower.

If you were elected to public office (never mind whether you'd ever actually run), what book would you swear in on?

Ok, this is *so* easy to dunk on, but actually something sorta profound happens here. Altman says ChatGPT is a "genius level intelligence" and then contrasts this with his newborn dropping pizza on the floor and laughing. The conversation moves on, but this is a moment worth pondering... 1/n
Jimmy Fallon: "And do you use ChatGPT when raising your baby?"

Sam Altman: "I cannot imagine figuring out how to raise a newborn without ChatGPT."

I think @nberlat.bsky.social is absolutely right here. The only quibble I’d have is I do think Gaza was a major drag on Dems last year but that’s because they weren’t running on moral objections to a genocide. If they had, I think the election would have been even narrower.
Gavin Newsom says the Ds need to be more "normal" to win elections. This is an anti trans, anti LGBT dogwhistle. That is disgusting for a range of reasons, but also—Ds are winning tons of elections! It is not 2024! www.everythingishorrible.net/p/it-is-no-l...

If it hasn't been said, I'll say it: No woman of color would ever be defended in this "she's just a smol bean" fashion & many Black, Latina, Asian & Indigenous women have had their lives & careers destroyed for nothing, or for far, far less. Same goes for trans women. These are just fucking facts.
Possibly the only thing more freakish than Nuzzi's prose is the contortions her defenders twist themselves into. "She's not just hot, but she definitely is hot, while also being a vulnerable smol child. Also, criticizing her is sexist."

I’m sure @edzitron.com is right (he’s probably forgotten more about this than I know) but damn, there really SHOULD be laws against the type of insane marketing that the GenAI companies have engaged in
I believe that NVIDIA is breaking no laws, committing no fraud, and not doing anything other than forcing partners to buy endless GPUs, taking advantage of exec ignorance and FOMO. Repercussions will be the company's main revenue source going away (NVDA won't die)
@edzitron.com i know its annoyng asking the same question but i really want to know your opinion if nvida will survive all of this not only the bubble but all that coming after i really dont think they can go withow any repercutions maybe not in u.s with their current administration but in the EU?

Journalism costs money and I don’t think people appreciate how little most journos who do great work are paid. I don’t like the paywall model, but until something different comes along *cough* breaking up the ad duopoly *cough* anyone who bitches about it is just being dickish.
FYI this is an immediate block. You’re under no obligation to pay for my or anyone else’s work, but you won’t come onto my feed to complain about us earning a living.

Once again, we are not required to pretend to be stupid. Farage is clearly, obviously, patently racist. His entire career has been built on it.
I agree that we should not judge Farage solely on the racist things he said when he was a kid. We should also judge him on the racist things he has done with the entire rest of his life.

Not to go all Kevin Keegan, but I would love it - LOVE IT - if columnists had to actually engage with this sort of criticism of their slapdash half-thoughts.

Wouldn't it be lovely if Phillips next piece had to be a sincere apology for impugning the work of actual journalists? Won't hold my breath
On a purely factual point, Trevor Phillips’s column in the Times misrepresents our reporting in casting doubts on claims that there were more boys called Patel than Smith at Dulwich in 1980 (we did not report 1976 as the year it occurred). 1980 roll shows 13 Patels and 12 Smiths.
