Something that I feel has been missed in the discussion of A’ja Wilson’s greatness is that the payoff of her ascent is earned.

Four years to the day since being blocked by Brittney Griner with a series on the line, Wilson’s game three game winner marks the completion of her hero’s journey.
With A WNBA Finals Game Winner In Hand, A'ja Wilson's Ascent Is Now Complete
There's no question about it now. One win away from a third WNBA title in four years and on the heels of a Game Three game winning jumper, A'ja Wilson is officially the undisputed best in the world.

The CBA, Saudi money, Unrivaled, conflicts of interest, an embattled commissioner, and increased NBA involvement: here's a mega-primer for what promises to be the most chaotic, transformational offseason in WNBA history

The WNBA’s Future Is on the Clock
It’s a make-or-break offseason for the WNBA. Is the league headed for a lockout? Or will the players get the changes they’re demanding?

Your annual reminder that Columbus Day was named to placate the Italian-American community after the largest mass lynching in the history of this country.

Nothing good ties Italian and Sicilian Americans to Columbus Day and there’s no reason to fight tooth and nail for it.

We’re in agreement lol it just wasn’t matched in the thread.

I can't tell you how many times I've heard from people the idea of "Columbus Day is *ours*" because it's about protecting a place within society.

It's why the overcompensation and generational insecurity of being 'immigrants' is projected onto anti-immigrant sentiment. The status is always tepid.
aghaubner.bsky.social
Taking away Columbus Day, to the Italian-Americans in my life that fight so ardently for it, isn't about what the guy did.

It's about another group having their own day while Italians lose theirs.

It's an insecurity of returning to 'immigrant' status, which they hate more than anything.
aghaubner.bsky.social
I think Italian-Americans, in this case, really took an aesthetic gesture as evidence that they were welcomed by the elite class of white American society.

Columbus Day, to them, isn't necessarily about Columbus. It's about the holiday being a status symbol of their inclusion in that strata.
adamserwer.bsky.social
I used to think people just didn’t understand what Columbus did but now I think some are really attached to him (as opposed to other worthy italians to celebrate) because their whole thing is not only getting away with doing horrible things but forcing everyone to praise them for being horrible
aghaubner.bsky.social
Argue to nationalize the Feast of San Gennaro and call it Fermi Day or something.

But I’m tired of Italian and Sicilian Americans battling for a holiday that connotes our capitulation to American society’s empty and aesthetic gestures.

At their lowest point this year, Becky Hammon had Aces’ players start doing their own scouting reports and putting together practice plans. She thought it would be temporary. It helped them turn everything around: www.si.com/wnba/aces-lo...
“Sometimes you kind of get used to just the coaches doing all the work, trying to motivate people, giving stories, the speeches, everything,” said Loyd, also new to the team this season. “It hits different when it comes from your team. It’s personal ... People are getting more vulnerable in the locker room, opening up, and I think that’s when we all just opened up to each other a little more. We kind of just used that as a bonding mechanism, and it allowed us to just really buy into everyone’s story, with a lot of stuff to hold ourselves accountable on and be more vocal and take some ownership.”

Never a boring night in this league lmfao

That’s always the Faustian bargain lol because ultimately we are rooting for more capitalism at the end of the day on some level

I thought Tamika’s point on workaround equity in the NBA was fascinating because that’s the capitalist answer to the problem. I hope the PA doesn’t get suckered into that
aghaubner.bsky.social
I think what makes it so unique is the total lack of historical analog for what’s happening. I don’t think there’s been an environment where athletes of this caliber are still so closely aligned with a normal American worker and their experience since maybe…the 70’s or 80’s? Maybe?

To say the Las Vegas Aces' Kierstan Bell has been on a journey in the WNBA would be an understatement.

Amidst the outside noise, she persevered into now playing a legit role for a Las Vegas team that is one win away from a WNBA Championship.

The Lakers say he will be re-evaluated in 3-4 weeks, which means he likely is out until early to mid-November. At least.

While it's easy for new fans of the game to assume A'ja Wilson has always been in the GOAT conversation, the reality is that the climb was anything but easy.

But knowing that backstory makes her game winner on Wednesday all the more meaningful.
