Hello there! I’m an archaeologist and 3D artist, and when I can I’ll post about my art, archaeology, or my other interests. #PortfolioDay
Roman period ship sailing within site of a coastline. Hull is painted red and green, Isis is painted on the bow, and the sails are billowing as the 5-person crew works on deck. Based on the Anse de Laurons 2 shipwreck, a 15-m long sailing merchant ship. Isometric view of a Pompeiian tavern. Fire is on in the oven, smoke and steam from hot food fill the room. Food is on the counter and tables, amphorae are on racks and leaning against walls and furniture. Walls and counter are painted. A small dog sleeps in the backroom, visible behind the curtain. Blue, red, and gilt chairs, benches, and tables with turned legs up against a colorful tapestry in the Great Hall of Guildford Castle. Reconstruction for Historic VR. Vimose-Illerup Ådal Swords (3rd Century CE). Three variations of Roman Cavalry swords found in a Danish bog. All three have pattern welded blades with swirling patterns, and gold and silver handles. Center sword has a brown wood guard and pommel, and mottled red and black scabbard. Sword on the left has ebony pommel and guard, and on the right is an ivory variant.

Israeli ceasefire means it will massacre the emaciated maimed shell of a body they left you in for entering your own home, then claim Israeli terrorists were feeling unsafe near your house while they were destroying what was left of your life and family.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

Clear view of lightning withing a thunderstorm cell that was building over Clark Dry Lake and Rabbit Peak on 9-18-25. As seen that evening from Coyote Canyon where the coyotes joined in for a howl fest for a while.

Reading through this book now, very interesting history of labor and labor action in the Roman Empire! Go buy it!

I don’t like giving money to Bezos or advocating for buying books from Amazon, but they are selling my book for $3.83 today—in hardback (as opposed to $35). The paperback will be out in January, so I guess they are fire 🔥 selling their stock. In case you are interested www.amazon.com/Strike-Labor...

On Israeli archaeological malpractice, heritage crimes, and US complicity #archaeology #🏺
Title: Illegal excavations in East Jerusalem—archaeological malpractice in service of Zionism and Israel’s ‘holy war’ in the region

Image: Silwan village, occupied East Jerusalem, with the Haram al-Shareef complex and al-Aqsa mosque above.
www.alt-arch.org The Palestinian village of Silwan in occupied East Jerusalem lies right below the southern corner of Haram al-Shareef, the complex upon which the al-Aqsa mosque rises. On Monday the 15th of September 2025, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio walked below the roads of this village, all the way to the Western Wall plaza inside the Walls of the Old City. This was the grand opening ceremony of a tourist attraction that was not only built in contravention of International Law, and the principles of archaeological methodology, but is also foreboding of grave danger to the status quo that protects the sovereignty of the compound. The area of Silwan has been inhabited con-tinuously since the Bronze Age, and has been the object of archaeological attention from as early as 1838, when British biblical scholar Edward Robinson, in his travels through Ottoman Palestine, iden-tified the pool of water located at the bottom of the hill as the Siloam pool, mentioned in the christian Gospels. A long series of excavation campaigns followed Robinson’s early exploration. During the following century, the area witnessed large scale campaigns led by the German, French and British Schools of Archaeology. The most recent of them, conducted by Dame Kathleen Kenyon, and dubbed by her biographer “the last great imperial excavation”, was interrupted only by the 1967 Six Day War.

Loving this series! A question I had is: How much of the peasantry actually owned land, and how many were purely serfs/ tenant farmers? I’m assuming there is wide variation based on period and culture, but let’s say in Roman Egypt vs. some Medieval European culture?

I think a very large proportion of english-language legacy media and elite journalism generally does not exist to report on reality so much as to promote a priori narratives.
michaelhobbes.bsky.social
From an Atlantic editor.

I cannot get over how the entire centrist hivemind is attempting to wish into existence a person, and a movement, that does not exist. You are journalists, you are supposed to describe things as they are, not how you want them to be!
I don't think it's simpering praise. He was an interesting man. I didn't agree with much that he said, but he was interesting and he was growing, and his death is a significant loss for those who believe engagement can help bridge disagreements.

It’s not so much that they are silent, it’s that usually the background noise pollution is such that it drowns out the noise they do make. If ICE engines were banned the noise from EV tires and motors would be quite noticeable imo.

Remembering MN house speaker Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark and their beloved dog Gilbert. Murdered in June at their home by a rightwing Trump-voting evangelist, who also shot another MN lawmaker and his wife at THEIR home, 9 and 8 times, respectively (miraculously, they survived).

We have a bit of a natural experiment here. Compare the tone, quantity and duration of Charlie Kirk coverage with that of the two Dem lawmakers gunned down in their homes in Minnesota 6 months ago. May be revealing.

Curious! Also because hooded cloaks were actually fairly common in the Celtic regions during the Roman period, being considered a distinctive Celtic garb. Interesting that it seems to have disappeared then? There was even a cult of hooded spirits (genii cuccullati)
From Wikipedia entry on hooded spirits, photo by Carol Raddato. Three men in hooded cloaks carved in rough low relief in sandstone. Only their faces and feet are visible under their cloaks.

Cool! This inscription looks a little rough compared to the other Latin ones, right? Weren’t the others in relief, instead of inscribed?
