As someone who literally inputs the data, I can even more confidently tell you that's not how the data is input. It can be translated like that, but it's not input like that.

We don't actually use the Retrosheet/Bill James scoring system anymore. I mean, I use it on my paper scoresheet, because it's easier to keep track of, but there's a different system for tracking everything now.

Regardless, MLB wants this to be a GIDP. I've had plays where a ball was a line drive that was dropped and they changed it to a ground ball, because they have very specific internal definitions that don't necessarily match up with the ball's trajectory or location.

The reviewed it because the Dodgers challenged the play, not because the umpires were confused.

The umpires were never confused. The LF umpire correctly called the ball not caught. The HP umpire correctly called a force at home. The 3B umpire correctly called the force at 3rd. The only confusion was on the part of the Dodgers runners.

Vin and Jon Miller are two guys who I know would have immediately called it correctly the first time, including pointing out that there was an active force play at third base before the catcher ran there.

It's a break because with the bases loaded they gave up a deep fly to center field, where if caught would result in a run, if not caught would result in multiple runs, but instead was not caught and resulted in zero runs. That's a break.
