Why is Goldsmith doing this? Is it another coalition agreement line item? And who does it benefit (besides ACT donors)? Just daft that this govt is willing to waste yet more millions for ideological (even racist) nonsense.

Govt ignored advice against overturning marine title rulings
The advice given was that by doing so it could cost millions and affect decisions over 200km of coastline.

Now this is cool.

Overseas comedian making a joke about Kiwis not having a chant.

Then someone in the audience sings out Tūtira Mai Ngā Iwi and the whole audience shouts Hi aue hei in response.

So the comedian tries to learn it.

Good vibes, real kiwis.

this is just the latest weakening in a series of successive weakenings of NZ science — the country of Ernest Rutherford is cutting its universities off at the knees, speeding along the departure of its top minds to brighter shores

this appears to be a power grab from actual scientists: funding decisions regarding Marsdens will soon be made by an 8-member panel with "a mix of academic, government and industry expertise" rather than the Marsden Fund Council which has (checks notes) 7 professors and 1 distinguished professor
Research Funding New Zealand
Research Funding New Zealand is a new independent board, being established to consolidate funding decision makers across the science, innovation and technology system.

This will simplify processes and improve transparency. It will also ensure funding is aligned with the Science Investment, which will set out strategic research priorities, and with the four pillars of national importance focused around the economy, environment, health and society, and technology.

Read more about the strategic approach to the science system:

A new strategy for the science system

Research Funding NZ will replace most existing decision makers across the system, including the Marsden Fund Council, the Science Board, some of MBIE’s decision-making functions and in the future, the Health Research Council.

The transition to Research Funding NZ will be phased over time. The Health Research Council operates under the Health Research Act. We’re working through the details of next steps to include health research funding under Research Funding NZ. The decision to move to a single funding body is in no way a reflection of the existing funders in the system.

Research Funding NZ will oversee the development and implementation of Pillar Investment Plans detailing the mix of funds and their criteria required to achieve strategic objectives. The Pillar Investment Plans will be informed by the Science Investment Plan. Research Funding NZ will also be required to monitor and evaluate the performance and impact of investments. This will ensure public investment is delivering value for New Zealanders.

Research Funding New Zealand Board members
The Board will be appointed by and report to the Science, Innovation and Technology Minister and consist of 8 members. Members will provide a mix of academic, government and industry expertise and strong strategic and governance expertise.

The recruitment process for Board Members is underway. Appointments will be made over the …

Once again, we're doing:

- Climate destruction
- Environmental destruction
- Science destruction
- Healthcare destruction
- Deregulation as per big biz
- Racism
- Tax breaks for rich people
- Special visas for rich people
- Voter suppression

But this is New Zealand, not America #nzpol

NZ's govt has announced reforms to science funding

just one line about basic science in there: "Discovery-led science & research will continue to be funded. This will sit outside the pillars & is essential for maintaining vibrant curiosity-driven science system"

yea mate seems like a real priority
A new strategy for the science system | Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment
The Government is changing how science, innovation and technology are funded and supported in New Zealand. The goal is a simpler and more strategic system that helps researchers turn ideas into solutions that benefit New Zealand.

I worked with a sales guy who dumped long term contracts for derisory sums like this. He boosted his sales figures, took his bonuses, then left the company before the shit hit the fan.

Yep. All this. Worked with similar people.

They all do it - boost the short term sales, the accounts get the sugar hit, boss is happy, actually required things that ought to be done are defrayed, delayed or just dispensed with - and then it predictably all turns to shit after.

Literal vandals.

there are a ton of changes in here but a huge one appears to be taking the Marsden fund, our main supporter of basic science, away from the Royal Society and handing it to a govt agency "Research Funding New Zealand" which does not yet exist

I'm not a comms person or a politician, just an outside observer, but this seems to me to be a matter of urgency for Labour.
The intensity of this kind of questioning is only going to ramp up, so Labour politicians need to plan ways to fend off the right wing framing and shift the narrative.

And he doesn't have to accept right wing framing and narratives about the Greens and TPM. They should have strategies in place to fend off this kind of bullshit without buying into it.

Next time an institution tells you how seriously it takes research misconduct, ask them if it's *this* seriously. www.bmj.com/content/297/...
In 1916 the BMJ published an article about the work done by James Shearer, an American physician working in the British Army as a sergeant (because he had no British qualification). He had described a
"delineator" which was better than x rays for portraying gunshot wounds. This caused a sensation and a lot of interest — but on investigation the work was found to have been invented. The BMJ published a retraction, but Shearer was tried by court martial and sentenced to death by firing squad.

Regulatory Standards Bill will expose the SPCA to penalty if they remove abused animals; it will expose taxpayers to compensate suspected criminals for confiscated assets; farmers can do as they want; Peter Thiels can build bunkers anywhere. A terrible bill with > 98% opposed. #nzpol
