Inspired by a pic Jeremy @floregonian.com posted of the sea I’m starting a thread of sea / water related pictures I’ve taken. Bear with me as I add to it sporadically as I seem to have quite a few pics in my phone. Most were taken in Aotearoa New Zealand. I’ll start with my profile pic.
Tony Freediving with a seal. We are both looking at each other (I’ve got a speargun in my hand but deliberately not pointing it at the seal). Pic taken at the end of Karikari Peninsula, Northland, New Zealand

Actually I recall Steve saying he had teachers sign up from other countries - so if you like the Kiwi accent then get stuck in!

Steve lives in Snells Beach.

I organised an evening where he came down and spoke to my Coastguard unit.

Excellent, enthusiastic guy who has won a heap of awards for his work eg. Blake Medal, and even a BAFTA for his work on BBCs Blue Planet 2

Here's something for New Zealand parents and teachers of primary age kids. It's free (and Riley and Steve are an awesome daughter / father team!)

Agreed. Luck and privilege (race, birthplace and much more - including the work of others like our parents) underpin so much of what we can do but on top of that our choices / priorities / dreams influence things too

Could you pls do an old ex-Art History teacher a solid, sign this petition to save the subject in our schools, and pass it on.

These philistines need to hear from you all.

Thank you

I was slightly frustrated when my parents phone number went from 6 digits (excluding area code) to 7 digits. Their 6 digit number had a certain pattern/cadence to it and the random digit introduced in the middle broke that cadence.

(Mum still has that number so best I don’t share it)

Absolutely! We love our walks on the local beaches too. (and after work swims)

And both of those options carry a lot of privilege so I know I’m lucky (but I also prioritise my spending so I can do that sort of stuff I guess )

When I get grumpy I switch to planning a little trip on the sea (or, even better, actually go for said trip).
ahafoka.bsky.social
True that!

Although I kind of have that pain a bit later as the fuel card gives me 12c/litre off the pump price and I get billed in the following month ... (and I filled the boat up last week when we went out for a quick trip).
ahafoka.bsky.social
Fuel tank and water tank both pretty much full now ... so that's around 1200 kg of fluid ...

(I won't have to refuel for a while ... )

While I feel your frustration I also thank you for letting us ride along for a bit.

:) Didn't Jason Paris give his email out a while ago? Find that and email him screenshots ...

Power cut at home for urgent maintenance so I’ve brought my laptop down to the boat so I can work. Of course it’s raining … and I’m filling the boat with water

(Fresh water in the 450 litre storage tank as we’re going away for the coming weekend - it takes a while to fill)
View through the front windscreen of Mānava with the radio and instruments in the foreground, rain on the windows and a view of other boats in Gulf Harbour Marina, Whangaparaoa, Auckland.

I think it was during the last mens RWC in NZ that the NZ Rugby Union tried to promote Tutira mai as a bit of an anthem - they failed as it felt too manufactured (NZers don't like that).

And Ruby does it a few years later on her own with her personality and passion.

nah mate, you're all good.

We do get a lot of "that's not correct" or "WTF it's not spelt that way" and also assumptions that we are talking about American events / cultural references etc. and you don't give that vibe at all.
ahafoka.bsky.social
Yeah, we didn't use those terms at home but they we were / are familiar with them.
ahafoka.bsky.social
TBH many of the brands you listed are used as common terms in NZ too. That's partially because of cultural influences (we see a LOT of American films etc. here) and also because they are just used. (add Hoover to the list too)

The English language is weird (not just the colonial versions)
ahafoka.bsky.social
😂 At least we (New Zealand) don't have a lot of brand names included as free advertising. Esky is a brand of "chilly bin" and what Aussies call them. "doona" is a brand of duvet and doona is common parlance in Australia.
ahafoka.bsky.social
Yeah, they are introduced pests in NZ. Still a few on Kawau Island and maybe other places.
