This one? S took the photo one Friday after work as we cruised north from Whangaparaoa to Kawau. The sun was setting over the mainland and it was a bit of a “calm before the storm” moment. (Coming home the next day was QUITE different )

Looks like I’ve taken a few pictures at sunrise and sunset while out in the boat.

Google photos created this montage (ignore the music).

They are all from around the Hauraki Gulf (Kawau & Waiheke Islands mostly )

And orca from afar. These pictures were taken around 5 minutes drive from home. Off Manly beach and Stanmore Bay, Whangaparaoa, Auckland, NZ

(I’ve had them swimming round and under a small boat too but I didn’t have a camera or phone with me).

One of the fur seals is in my profile pic (but that was from a few years ago now).

Here’s a little blue penguin from about a month ago (poor quality pic as I was on a boat that was rocking around and the little blue penguins are … little

I do enjoy it and have put a bit of thought into setting things up so I can enjoy where I live.

Here’s the view right now

We saw some of the pink algae that indicates a possibility of bioluminescence too.

And then saw bioluminescence in Bon Accord Harbour (at 3am …). I splashed around with the net and tried to get pics & video but they don’t do it justice

And we were lucky to get a visit by the local taxman … a bronze whaler shark decided he wanted a late afternoon snack (I was cleaning fish).

Yesterday was a stunner of a day!

The water was sooo calm and it’s already pretty warm. Here’s what it was like in Bostaquet Bay (southern end of Kawau Island).

Summer is coming #kikorangi

The comp starts tomorrow at Arquipélago Tamboretes off the coast of São Francisco do Sul.

It's a small not very diveable area and 80 ish boats will be jostling for position and there will be lots of divers in murky water.

Good luck to the kiwi team - stay safe!

A mate of mine (through underwater hockey, underwater rugby, freediving and spearfishing) is in the NZ team at the CMAS World Spearfishing champs Sao Francisco Do Sol, Brasil.

(He's also repped NZ at freediving and UWR)

There's only a couple of days left to submit on the inclusion of 19 reef species (and marlin) in commercially landed and sold catch. Here's my submission:

One bloke pitched it up and it rolled past the hole within less than 12 inches!

It’s a beautiful day to be standing under a tree.

I’m the witness on the hole-in-1 par 3 hole at our Coastguard Hibiscus fundraising golf comp.

If someone gets a hole in one they get a new Skoda

At Coastguard Hibiscus we’ve been getting ready for the busy summer with a combo of on water skills / drills & land based refreshers and discussions.

The last 2 weeks have been focused on first aid. Last week we went through the equipment on the boats to make sure the crew know what’s where etc

It’s a beautiful day on the Hauraki Gulf. Lots of boats out but no taskings so far.

We’ve stopped for lunch at Tiritiri n Wharf

Sadly the missing boat and fishermen out of Pataua South (just north of Whangarei) has not had a good outcome so far.

Here’s the FB post for Northland Coastguard Air Patrol where they detail their work. And some screenshots so you don’t have to go to FB

As I’ve mentioned before the boat day is on my boat and for #kikorangi folks I’ll take 8 guests if you message me to discuss the sort of day you would like.

Get a group together and I’ll do my best to make it a memorable day on the Hauraki Gulf.

Last weekend we lost propulsion on the port engine & had to limp home on one engine. Mānava came out of the water this morning at Gulf Harbour Marina & I was expecting major issues in the leg aka EXPENSIVE (la new leg!) but luckily it’s the bush that connects to prop to the driveshaft that was
