I do believe people can self-govern. I don't believe that shame is the only way to prevent harmful behaviors, and I don't know of anyone who does believe that, but shame is one of the social tools available.

Authoritarianism isn't the only form of social organization. Humans aren't inherently top-down hierarchical. There's evidence that we evolved towards flat hierarchies, egalitarianism. But mostly we're adaptable to lots of kinds of social systems.

The current hierarchical order I think undermines the effectiveness of shame. Those with enough power can stave off the pain of shame by hiding from the people shaming them, and by surrounding themselves with sycophants who will balm the shame pain.

Also the remaining stateless, egalitarian societies utilize shame in varying degrees for social cohesion. Most instances are soft teasing so the shame isn't too painful. It's pretty effective. But they also use much harsher forms when needed. Shame as a social tool definitely doesn't need daddies.

My big disagreement with that article is that the author seems to believe that shame as a social force requires some form of authoritarianism, and I disagree on a fundamental level. Everyone has experienced behavior altering shame from our peers in the hierarchical order.

Transness is not bourgeois. This is a wedge idea dreamed up by some gleefully amoral think tank lobotomite to split trans people and make us fight each other. That we relay on modern medicine doesn't make us any more bourgeois than someone who needs antidepressants or cleft palate repair.

Fenway health in Boston has stopped providing gender affirming care to trans youth.

I was previously on the board of this organization and I've never been so disgusted with their leadership cowardly capitulating like this.
