Oh, man! This is not the kind of historical artifact that should be just chopped up for firewood for the winter. If this facility closes, it should be properly evaluated before it changes hands.

Very sorry to see that the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute is up for sale. Anybody know someone with $30M? 🔭https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/1-Pari-Dr-Rosman-NC/37287415/?siteid=7049
Real estate listing, asking $30M for the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute, a former NASA satellite tracking facility. The photo shows the site, with two prominent single dish radio telescopes and other cold-war era structures in the blue ridge mountains of western North Carolina.

The injustice behind stronger hurricanes runs deeper than the storms themselves—exposing fragile grids, health risks, and energy inequities.

Join us tomorrow for #EcoMadresInvestigates (in Spanish) as we explore why clean, reliable energy is a public health necessity.

Congrats to Deztynee Bryan on your @ametsoc.org 2025 Graduate Fellowship! Bryan's research focuses on tropical cyclones: on understanding the microphysical and kinematic processes that influence their intensity and predictability, with an emphasis on utilizing airborne radar observations.

For your Wednesday, friends, have a deep-field image from #JWST taken late 2023 and early 2024.

The six-sided features are stars in the Milky Way.

Everything else you see?

A galaxy.
A few bright, blueish star-shaped features are dotted throughout the scene. The remaining features are smaller, a little less bright, and of various shapes. The background is darkest black.

This is 'Rakotzbrücke Devil’s Bridge', commissioned in 1860 in the German village of Kromlau in Gablenz on the estate of Friedrich Herrmann Rötschke, now a public park.

Its purpose is ornamental: to form a perfect circle with its own reflection when light & wind permit.

Not only has the US killed 27 people (by its figures, independent verification obviously being difficult), they haven't presented evidence or any real legal authority to justify this. Even as they formalized it under a task force.
chrislhayes.bsky.social
Unless and until some kind of compelling legal and moral argument is presented as to why this is a legitimate use of deadly force, this is just…mass murder.

The military has now killed 27 people as if they were enemy soldiers in a war zone and not criminal suspects. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/14/u...

Double, double toil and trouble: As the climate warms, the oceans bubble. And those bubbles have a big impact on carbon storage, suggests new research.

More Bubbles Means More Variation in Ocean Carbon Storage - Eos
A new model accounting for the role of bubbles in air-sea gas exchanges suggests that ocean carbon uptake is more variable than previously thought.

TL;DR, I love the airframe as a future agricultural plane, but I have no idea how effective the military version is at fighting real wars.

Find the real experienced experts, they are not me and have way more data & wisdom to offer.

Cleanup crews for armor where there's no air defense.

I'm an amateur & a civilian, so I am likely just fanboying from my 70s / 80s wannabe pilot kid.

A-10s could mean the difference between a Ukrainian Crimea or a Russian military dominance outpost.

I vote Ukrainian Crimea, & the A-10 deserves a swan-song beating back authoritarianism in the name of democracy & self-evident -

Hypothetical Ukrainian A-10s. Beautiful. My sister is a fighter pilot, I'm former SOF. We have VERY different opinions about A-10s and my opinion is really the only one that actually matters. Why? Because I depended on this machine and she never has. Ukraine needs these warbirds. Slow and lethal!

Rich oil & gas deposits have built the modern world of near-infinite convenience.

Gigatons of carbon in the atmosphere & gigatons of microplastics pollution worldwide & all the other things are the costs where we never considered paying the price.
