So it’s official: I’ve joined CARVAKAS as their bass player. It’s a Progressive Death Metal band from Chile 🇨🇱 with 4 albums, and their lyrics are about Ancient Philosophy and Materialism. You can find us on Spotify, Bandcamp (support us if you can!) and most music platforms. This is from rehearsal.

What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book because there would be no one who wanted to read one.

Oh good, ChatGPT is getting "erotica for verified adults" later this year
We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.

Now that we have been able to mitigate the serious mental health issues and have new tools, we are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases.

In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it (but only if you want it, not because we are usage-maxxing).

In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.

Mark Zuckerberg has a vision for how A.I. could be used in Meta's universe.

But the actor and filmmaker Joseph Gordon-Levitt is here to point out a flaw in the technology: an apparent lack of guardrails around how the company's chatbot interacts with underage users. nyti.ms/3ILwCNo

There’s this whole industry of [check notes] watching Black Mirror episodes and coming with a philosophically-flavored take about the future. I don’t know if many of the things currently being said will age well.

Many, many years ago, I tweeted that I would totally watch a version of The Godfather with Gilbert Gottfried instead of Marlon Brando. Make it so. Gilbert Gottfried on all the movies.

Related: My first philosophy professor once lent me a book of his and I was immediately blown away. I saw for the first time what it means to inhabit a text, to work to try to understand why the author said what they said, and what I might---might---have to say in response. My life changed forever.
My annotations from a random PDF in my "Annotated Scholarly Articles" folder. This one is from p. 108 of Loren Lomasky's "Liberty and Welfare Goods: Reflections on Clashing Liberalisms"

Spotify suggested this single to me, and while I should nominally enjoy it, it turns out I'm already sick of Discount-Store, cheap Tool knockoffs. I never liked Tool in the first place, anyway. open.spotify.com/track/6hLeZX...

You know, it's rather painful to see the same things playing out in the USA that we had in Chile in 2019, right in the same order (minus the deportations, tho). My forecast is that it will not end well.

Um, actually, it was invented by Peirce.

Absolutely no respect for the history of our discipline on this website. 😤

I prefer a chronological approach. Philosophy was invented by Frege, so I’d start there.

Someone said recently that the best philosophy being done today is coming out of Pittsburgh.

I'm sorry but if that were true, I wouldn't be able to refute the whole corpus in one tweet

I like R. S. Bakker's idea of the SEMANTIC APOCALYPSE, that proverbial moment when humanity as a whole peels the last layer of the onion we are, and find… nothing. But, contra the tech bros and the AI hype, I don’t think we’re on the verge of cracking it. rsbakker.wordpress.com/2011/06/21/w...

Here’s the comic book version (the only version, given the kinds of complexities these issues generalize over): In social terms, you could suggest that the Semantic Apocalypse has already hap…
