There's no "regular politics" anymore because you can no longer maintain the idea that we all agree on common goals but we only differ about the means of getting there or whatever. The guys in charge now are plainly amoral, sadistic nihilists. They delight in it! You can't civilly disagree with that

It was an honor to talk Saturday at the Sanfilippo Foundation about the Uptown Theatre — and to see the amazing collection at Sanfilippo, starting with the Uptown's chandeliers. There' s so much cool stuff — these pictures are just a tiny sample. Well worth a visit. www.sanfilippofoundation.org

There was pearl clutching about cops resigning en masse if Brandon Johnson won the mayoral election for Chicago in 2023, while I think he's a fairly mediocre mayor, it turns out they didn't. Long-standing right wing trope fails to deliver yet again.

Peak white mediocrity (Bari Weiss) is publishing the same basic article that was published in 1990 about David Dinkins, or in 1983 about Harold Washington, and applauding oneself for being a brave truth teller.

Lmao is this supposed to be a bad thing?
A tweet from Bari Weiss that says “"It's shaken me to my core," a lieutenant said of Mamdani's unexpected victory in June. "The absolute dread I feel is palpable.
"
Today in @TheFP our @Olivia_Reingold talks to the cops who say they will walk if Zohran Mamdani is elected in November:”

My wife is collecting signatures for a sweet ballot measure in Michigan that would tax income over $1,000,000 to reduce class sizes while recruiting and retaining great teachers.

But they're way behind.

So she was tasked with bringing in someone who could help gather signatures.

Could it be you?

Gang, re: a Qatari presence in Idaho, may I recommend that you watch this from V Spehar/Under the Desk News + the one I linked immediately following it.

tl;dr
No, Qatar is not building a base in Idaho.
emilylhauser.bsky.social
A facility isn't a base - if I understand correctly, there was an agreement that Qatari pilots would come here for training on planes they're getting from us; a facility will be built to house them and their families while they're here for that training.

Forgive me for being too earnest but ever since reading this Rudyard Kipling poem, Kyle and I have been using "the worm in the wood" as our toast and it makes me feel a little better
A section from the poem "A Pict Song":

We are the Little Folk—we!
Too little to love or to hate.
Leave us alone and you'll see
How we can drag down the State!
We are the worm in the wood!
We are the rot at the root!
We are the taint in the blood!
We are the thorn in the foot! Hands cheers-ing with a martini and a gimlet

(Nothing against Steven, I used to do this too until I learned that it was a bad idea.)

Swim goggles hit by a projectile (like a tear gas canister or pepper ball) can direct force to the area around your eyeball and pop it out of your skull.

NOT desirable.

Pro tip to reporters and protesters: always have swim goggles in your pockets or bags. They’re small, $10 and if tear gas is used, slip them on & no matter how much you cough, you’ll still be able to SEE without burning eyes.

Chances are if they're blanketing an area with tear gas theyre also popping off pepper balls. PDs across the country have been purposefully aiming at people's faces. Better to get something shatter resistant than roll the dice on possible permanent eye damage
