but that's not the case for a LOT of american whites. so here in the states "what's your background?" basically means "do you know your family's country of origin?" and answer of "white" means some variant of "i got no idea/don't really care"

funny enough, there might even be a cultural misunderstanding here. there are definitely americans that will give a more specific answer if you ask their background (italians, for example), but only in cases where that cultural background is really strong in their family.

if i had to think about it my dad's family's last name is spanish and my mom's is german (i think?), but nothing about either of those comes across at all. we've just been in the states for far, far too long for any other answer to convey any useful information

actually now that I think about it, if you ask my ethnicity i'll likely just say "white," but if you asked me my background i'd tell you that I'm from Iowa. that tells you the culture i grew up in, the kind of food i ate as a kid, and it's where my accent is from. that's pretty common for americans

My mom has been substitute teaching and in one class the teacher had already provided her a PowerPoint. When it showed an AI image, a kid said "Aww man, not the AI!" So yeah, even some kids are over this bullshit already.
