that was a great forum, one of my favorite in the last couple months. good vibes from the audience, love the responses they'd have, this city is very segregated and you also see it in how people don't come to the north side for events, same as open streets broadway, and they are missing out

At the Ward 8 for a New Mayor rally last Saturday, Commissioner Angela Conley said the county's been trying to work with the mayor on homelessness for seven years and he's shut them out.

After the Mayor vetoed the Labor Standards Board, he had a letter read out loud in our council chambers where he said he would bring a proposal forward together in January 2025 with a unified vision and that the work “doesn’t end here."

It’s October. He didn’t. He lied again.
Minneapolis is a union town! Workers deserve a living wage and an affordable home. Mayor Frey turned his back on workers when he vetoed the Labor Standards Board and proposed gutting co-enforcement. As Mayor, I'll champion workers, and ensure our workforce can stay in Minneapolis.

I find it hysterical how the Democrats were openly saying that they will not have to do anything with Trump because the stock market will collapse and then he will have to dial back.

Like how much louder can they scream "The only thing we care about is what corporate america thinks".

The Mayor and his administration.

The city council funded it. This is why it’s frustrating to hear that people are “service resistant” or that people “refuse services” when the city isn’t doing everything it can.

We need a mayor who at a minimum will try. 🤷🤷🤷🤷🤷🤷

This article from Axios Twin Cities makes it appear like Frey’s reasoning for not wanting to fund an unsheltered housing program has merit—no vouchers for the program have been issued. But it neglects to mention that the Frey administration is responsible for issuing the vouchers!
Friction point: In August, to remedy Stable Homes Stable Schools' $3.2 million projected shortfall, Frey proposed canceling another promising anti-homelessness initiative to provide 100 emergency housing vouchers for chronically unsheltered individuals and families.
• Many City Council members believe this is needed just as urgently, and the council earmarked the funding last year to revive the pandemic-era program "that had incredibly successful outcomes at long-term housing stability," Ward 2 representative Robin Wonsley wrote in a newsletter.
Yes, but: No vouchers have been issued yet, so Frey administration officials decided it would be irresponsible to begin a new anti-homelessness initiative - promising though it may be - with an existing program short on funds.

If I’m reading Kyle right, Frey admits failing to issue 100 housing vouchers *that are funded this year because he wants to kill the program next year.* (This is not Stable Schools, but for single folks.) This is unallotment Trump-style, especially since county/MPHA are in.

Increasing stories of stuff like this brings back the strong mayor memories. Critics like me and John raised the concern that the Mayor would simply refuse to implement the council’s decisions. Strong Mayor backers assured us that would never happen.
On today's episode, Council President Payne and I talk about this issue as it relates to the city council funding (and Frey not implementing) civilian investigators for MPD.

Whereas Harris told MSNBC that she believes whether or not Israel has committed genocide is a fair and honest question to ask, Cory Booker explicitly said to the "I've Had it" podcast that he thinks addressing the question of whether Netanyahu has committed crimes would undermine resolving conflict.

We need a Mayor who will address homelessness seriously. Someone who will address fiscal cliffs and won’t pit vulnerable communities against one another because he doesn’t care about our unhoused neighbors. 2/

Instead of working to solve a budget crisis in partnership, Mayor Frey aired ads about a program he knows is at risk and could destabilize families who depend on the city’s support for housing. 1/

Minneapolis' model anti-homelessness program faces "fiscal cliff"
Mayor Jacob Frey has a plan to prop up Stable Homes Stable Schools — but it would cancel another anti-homelessness effort.

“We went out to Denver as a group, and some representatives from Hennepin County came and we learned about the Denver model, which was to have an intense effort around those investigations.”

HCAO did go and we were excited about the Denver model. Minneapolis didn’t implement it.
We treat every non-fatal shooting in Saint Paul with the same urgency as a homicide. We’re solving more cases, cutting crime by double digits, and producing a record-low homicide rate—proving this action-driven approach creates safer outcomes.
St. Paul solved more crimes, had drastically fewer homicides in 2025
A remarkable shift is under way in St. Paul. The city is on track for a 70 percent drop in homicides by the end of 2025. And they’re solving more than 70 percent of crimes.

The Strib’s Karen Tolkkinen has devoted column after column after column to her stubborn belief that trans kids are destroying opportunities for girls to compete in sports at school.

It’s her weird mission. She’s fucking obsessed.

Anyway, great letter from Max Maher today.
Karen Tolkkinen's column "Transgender athletes should not compete with girls, but everyone deserves a place to play" (StarTribune.com, Oct. 9) builds its case on emotion, not evi-dence. She acknowledges that "nobody knows how common" transgender athletes are in Minnesota, yet argues for restrictive policies anyway. That's not fairness; that's fear.

There's also no evidence that transgender participation has taken opportunities from anyone. The Minnesota State High School League already reviews eligibility case by case to ensure both inclusion and competitive balance. The system is working as intended - quietly and responsibly.

The idea that girls are being forced to sacrifice is a political talking point, not a measurable fact. What's really being asked of us is whether we believe every student deserves a place to belong, even those whose identity or experience we may not fully understand.

High school sports were never just about winning. They teach teamwork, discipline and self-respect, lessons that lose meaning if we start excluding students who simply want to play. Protecting opportunity for all young people is how we strengthen fairness, not weaken it.

I hope @dewayneforminneapolis.com doesn't mind me retelling a story he told me when we first met last winter. I kept it to myself because he wasn’t telling it publicly but he mentioned it yesterday. It’s one of the things that’s leading me to rank him first. A hope-its-ok-and-I-get-right 🧵:
Yesterday, I hosted an incredible event, "Ward 8 for a New Mayor." We talked about why we need a new mayor and then @jazzformayor.bsky.social , @omarfatehmn.com , and @dewayneforminneapolis.com laid out why they should be our next mayor. I came away excited about all of them and will rank all three!

Join @jasonmcgrath.bsky.social and me in co-hosting this Friday — Jason Chavez is doing SO MUCH to increase voter participation in Ward 9, a very progressive ward with traditionally low voter turnout.

The entire city benefits from his hard work, both at the council and in this critical election!

As @imarajones.bsky.social reminds us, “There are some people who are possibility models, and others who create possibilities. Miss Major is one of those, alongside Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P Johnson, who made it possible for trans people to have space in the world."
