Human eye top left, alien eye top right, title full-center, child facing a riot-police line with a mech bottom left, a Nicef (mech) with a beamsaber bottom center, young woman with half-body prosthetics in a medical cot bottom right. Art by Luigiix - from rear cover of the physical copy of NICEF, the Mercelo Aerospace Academy space station. It's overall a large, blocky, dark design, but has visible hemispheres on top for organic habitats with city-style structures inside. Art by Luigiix - the core protagonists of NICEF in their academy uniforms (black jacket and slacks with dress shoes, with insignias on the left side of the wearer's chest for their curriculum. Feather for pilot, half a cog for mechanical engineering, circuit-board mini diagram for software engineering). From left to right: Taegen Atius, Selene Ark, Stefan Mara, Blaire Phyzante, Djilia Oakren, Latien Varsan, Diela Kilan. This banner also serves as a height comparison. Taegen is the tallest, then Djilia, Diela, Stefan and Selene are about even, then Blaire, then Latien (who is specifically very short). Art by Luigiix - left side features Djilia Oakren in the Mercelo piloting uniform, standing casually and offering a wave to the viewer. She has a big, warm smile. Her eyes are metallic purple, her short hair a very dark brown, and her skin is tan (like Stefan's). - Right side features Djilia wearing a Nicef pilot suit. It resembles a futuristic, slimmed down spacesuit with LED lights and a glowing faceplate. There is a special pop-out view showing the inside of the back of the collar. Three mechanical panels extend out from the back of the collar. They would touch the pilot's neck. - Center features digital text information: Djilia Oakren; pilot candidate; age: 17 y.o.; House Status: Arbiter of Aroi House; Origin: Tagil, Aroi Settlement Colony; Known Skills: Nicef piloting

"...Masuyo Ouno, you are a rare creature. I will assist your wish, and I will learn from it. You say I will never understand, but I am willing to master this bond of family you espouse. So... not a curse. I will offer my protection to your child, and your child will teach me of family. We will become one. Wholly both. Neither loses, both gain."
The Demon King made his last choice. He wielded his tremendous magics as his true self one final time. The new soul of the baby, Masuyo's daughter, was encoiled in his soul. His power, his essence, his knowledge flowed into and joined the tiny human soul still forming.
Masuyo's daughter was the Demon King. #WIPSnips

Sounds like a good plan! I simply recommend getting some marketing know-how for yourself so you can better gage what they're offering.

Happy to! Though I should admit I'm hardly an example of 'success.' Trad works for folks, I just didn't see enough benefit to give up my IP rights.

Fanfiction deserves more respect from the writing and reading community, and publishers. They can be just as good or better then any "professional" work. One of the most famous works of literature in history is a slasher fanfic and no one bats an eye to see Dante's Divine Comedy on a top ten list.

Some of the best writing is in genres ignored by people who think that because it's accessible, it's too lightweight for them.

An author who can hold a reader spellbound for 250 pages has got it right.

God I wish we could get societal buy in on this one.
pjccahill.bsky.social
That's the thing, most of them don't do that anymore. Unless you're already a big timer worth investing in, it's all on you anyway.

That trad publishing actually offers no benefit over self publishing at this point. No hate intended to fellow authors who prefer it. I'm stating that it is purely a preference now.

Police officers who publicly declare that they’ll quit if a mayoral candidate they dislike wins the election are (1) usually bluffing—sure buddy, toss away that paycheck and pension—and (2) exactly the sort of cops cities would be better off without, ones who don’t see themselves as public servants.

I'll say it: I think its rly annoying and frankly amateurish that writers are constantly told their villains must be understandable or have sympathetic motivation to be interesting or realistic when all our big villains irl are in fact rich, stupid, selfish, trickster dillweeds and always have been

None could contest me. None could match me. For a time, that had been cathartic and satisfying. Utterly crushing all who opposed me. It was something I could revel in. I did so for a few centuries.
Yet, it was empty. Crushing those weaker than myself was pointless. The intelligent ones either never contested me, or fled the moment they comprehended how far beyond them I was. The fools died in droves at the most basic of my spells.
I craved martial combat, my claws rending flesh, and they couldn't even push me enough to get that far. #WIPSnips

A 13-year-old boy was arrested by ICE in Everett and sent to a juvenile detention facility in Virginia.
A 13-year-old boy was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Everett after an interaction with members of the Everett Police Department and sent to a juvenile detention facility in Virginia, according to his mother and immigration lawyer Andrew Lattarulo.

The boy’s mother, Josiele Berto, was called to pick her son up from the Everett Police Department on Thursday, the day he was arrested. After waiting for about an hour and a half, she was told her son was taken by ICE, Berto told the Globe in a phone interview.

“My world collapsed,” Berto said in Portuguese.

From the police department, the boy was taken to ICE’s holding facility in Burlington on Thursday evening, where he spent a night before being transferred by car to the Northwestern Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Winchester, Va., on Friday morning, his mother said. The juvenile facility is more than 500 miles away from Everett.

The boy is a 7th-grader at Albert N. Parlin School in Everett, his mother said. The teen and his family, who are Brazilian nationals, have a pending asylum case and are authorized to work legally in the United States, Lattarulo said.

I generally just go with a pacing method rather than core structure. Set-up > spike > repeat with the set-up also having downtime/breathing room and character interactions to develop b-plots. Most of it is building slowly toward a bigger stakes final climax. I'm also a big fan of denouement.
ddwardiswriting.bsky.social
So #WritingCommunity how do we feel about structure?

Do you use the 3 act structure? The 5 act?

Hero's Journey? Save the Cat? Super Structure Method? Story Genius Method?

Something else?

What have you got?
