I don't think it denigrates him at all. thats really the way to do it. Mel Brooks had said a number of times that his process was to create the story first, then layer the jokes on afterwards. its why his films tend to have fairly solid stories underneath all the absurdity.

I'm seen this with indie films, too. The ones where the entire cast is still alive at the end should be cradled like a rare and precious thing. esp indie genre films.

worse when its films with huge praise and awards.

to be fair, pratchett decreed in his will that any and all notes and rough drafts were to be destroyed and never be seen by the public. that doesn't sound like the actions of a man that feels he was hitting out gold first try. lol

i will throw out there that going in order IS a valid way of doing it, I did and they only got better as i went. BUT, not every is able to. if you think you are amiable enough, you may find something to love. but there is a chance you'll bounce off, in which case you can start in another place.

it goes the other way, too. someone will show up in the background of a book, or there will be some vague reference to something, and then in a later book that person will be a major character, or the something will be the focus of the entire plot.

and it never detracts from the current book.

like how every time the Librarian shows up in a book, his "explanation" is basically: he had been a librarian at a magical library and got turned into an orangutan.

and thats it

not mentioning that what did it was a literal world-altering magical event that he happened to catch a stray from.

he never dwells on things, because he wants the books to stand on their own as much as possible. Terry Pratchett's "Canon" can be summed up like this,

Terry, describing something weird in a later book: This was because of an accident in the past, anyway......

when the author himself says the book is a bad starting place, you know its probably bad. lol

tho, tbf, i started there & liked it enough to keep going. i didn't get the references, but i got stuff like the luggage (not realizing it was a mimic parody), or the insurants policy.

I think of it like, film historians doing dvd commentaries for stuff like Snow White, or BTS stuff on Fantasia.

One of the bigger surprises from the old Fantasia box set was when they mentioned that Dance of the Hours was a parody of an overplayed piece of music, which is why its weird. never knew
