Well, new platform means new people, so I may as well introduce myself. I'm a lawyer in Chicago, though I live in the western suburbs, and I'm just over 10 years into practice. This is a personal account, but my day job is Senior Counsel for the U.S. Railroad Retirement Board, a federal agency.

But I could be wrong. I assume you have a citation to a Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure or a statute or case law that would authorize what you're suggesting?
peterorlowicz.bsky.social
You have an overly optimistic view of what judges can "direct" DOJ to do and whether DOJ would accept such "direction" as within the court's authority, I think.
peterorlowicz.bsky.social
The judge isn't generally going to be appointing or otherwise identifying a prosecutor. What would you say if some rando off the street walked into court, plopped down an alleged indictment and said "I'm a prosecutor now, I'm charging Mr. Bell with a crime"?

Not a critique about Beau, but Burnham being "recently returned from serving as the General Counsel of DOGE" ought to be disqualifying for being taken seriously. 🖕

And the whole point of this procedural motion is to say "this prosecutor lacks the authority of the state to prosecute, because they were illegally appointed." That goes to the heart of a criminal prosecution.

Most "classics" are boring as fuck to a modern reader in no small part because the context of the story is not understood by them and so many of the allusions and "inside jokes" known to then-contemporary readers have been lost in time and in translation

"That's an excellent point, as lawyers and academics we should be precise in defining our terms. So, when I referred to the current OMB memo about back pay for furloughed workers as 'horseshit' I meant..."

This was a lot of fun. But I think we could do a caption contest with this photo.

Since this offer is a free benefit open to all federal employees not one that discriminates based on paygrade or type of duties, it's not considered a "gift" and can be accepted by any Federal employee under the ethics rules at 5 C.F.R. §2635.203(b)(4).

Government workers 👇🏾
Lunch is on the house:

Being in the heart of downtown DC, we love that so many of our Federal employees stop by during lunch for a Donburi at China Chilcano or a Fútbol Club at Jaleo. And just because the government is shut down doesn't mean you have to miss out on your favorite lunch spot- because this time, its on us!
Join us for lunch from 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM at any of our participating restaurants and enjoy a free lunch item when you present your government ID-you heard that right! Dine in with us Monday through Friday and choose your favorite: a sandwich at Jaleo, a donburi at China Chilcano, a wrap or pita at Zaytinya, or a torta at Oyamel.
We've always believed in serving our community with open arms and good food-no shutdown can stop that.

Shoot me a DM if you like, I'm happy to help how I can.

You can also see if there's a navigator in your state that can help. Navigators are state-funded positions created by the ACA to help people get enrolled for Medicaid and choose appropriate plans. www.healthinsurance.org/glossary/nav...

Also: if you work for ICE, even if you’re not one of the ones arresting citizens or tackling 15-year-olds or zip-tying kids together and segregating them by race, you’re part of the mechanism making it happen, and you should suffer long-term social and post-regime-change consequences.

Some weirdo on Twitter has been absolutely melting down for like 36 straight hours because I posted:

When this is over, do not forget what ICE did, and what ICE is. And do not make room for them in society. Make sure they know that they are, and will continue to be, reviled and beneath contempt.

If you think you know why US newspapers died, this feature documentary now streaming for free on PBS might surprise you. It wasn't the Internet. Newspapers were specifically targeted by vulture capitalists.

I composed the score for the film, which features electric cello & Crowfoot guitars.
