Don't let anyone tell you that the Commission's DSA enforcement against X is about speech or censorship.

That would, indeed, be interesting. But this is just the EU enforcing some normal, boring laws that would get bipartisan support in the U.S. (I bet similar bills *have* had that support.) 1/

There will be many who claim this is about "free speech," but it's not—it's about X and Musk's shady business practices:

-meaningless blue checks w no real verification
-a lack of ad transparency
-not providing data access for researchers

Reuters reporting that new admin instructions on visas are if you worked at a platform in trust & safety or content moderation or on fact checking or online safety at an platform you *and your loved ones* are ineligible for H-1B visa.

This is what government censorship actually looks like: defunding entire fields, deporting researchers, and quite effectively chilling speech that helps people understand how our information systems are being exploited and calls out powerful people and platforms for their bullshit.

“Donald Trump’s latest move to create a ‘media bias’ website and ‘offender tip line’ is not about defending truth; it is intimidation, and a dangerous escalation of the White House’s attacks on free speech in the United States.
“This ‘tip line’ is not a good-faith effort to correct errors or combat misinformation. It is a pipeline for harassment that can be weaponized against those who refuse to bend to the White House’s narrative. When the government singles out outlets and reporters it doesn’t like and invites citizens to play along, it sends a chilling message: report critically about those in power, and you could be next on the list.
“We’ve seen this tactic before. In 2022, when I was appointed to help the U.S. government set policy on how to respond to disinformation while protecting free speech, the MAGA movement launched a coordinated campaign of lies about my work. They falsely claimed I wanted to censor Americans and run a ‘Ministry of Truth.’ The result was harassment, doxxing, and violent threats against me and my family while I was pregnant. Today, the Trump administration is openly embracing the very behavior they falsely accused me of.
“At the American Sunlight Project, we are tracking these abuses in real time. Since inauguration day, we have documented nearly 200 instances in which Trump and his allies have tried to punish, silence, or intimidate people for speaking truth to power. The ‘media bias offender tip line’ is part of a broader censorship crusade that should alarm every American.
“We urge journalists, newsroom leaders, technology companies, policymakers and the American people to treat this for what it is: an attack on press freedom and an attempt to deputize the president’s supporters in a censorship campaign. As I explain in the video below, the Disinformation Governance Board never would have had a media bias list, and it certainly would have never had an "offender tip line." It was a *policy coordination body.*

This latest effort is nothing more than coordinated harassment against journalists.
