when do we think Young Republican organizations became primarily Nazi? I'd think at least a decade ago (when many of the people in that Politico piece would have been Young Republicans in their 20s). it seems to me a precursor of Trumpism rather than a product of it

so the conceptual trick that says future costs of present actions can be discounted not only relies on an assumption the future is always richer, it also elides that consequences will be experienced not by a single future 'we' equivalent to the present 'we' but a long series of future collectivities
monteurhulot.bsky.social
but e.g. the ton of carbon we produce now to enjoy benefits in the present does not just cause a time-limited harm in 2050, 2100, or 2300, but in all the years in between and potentially thousands of years into the future
monteurhulot.bsky.social
one basic feature of the discount rate as a concept obscures just how much it downplays the destructiveness of present actions: it generally compares the value of a good or action taken now to its assumed relative value at a single point in the future.
monteurhulot.bsky.social
if we actually take seriously the prospect that carbon emissions or habitat destruction occuring now may degrade or eliminate the basis for the production of necessary goods in the future, we may quickly reach the conclusion that the discount rate should be not just be low but be *negative*
monteurhulot.bsky.social
the discount rate, as currently deployed, is so fundamentally wedded to the ideology of constant increase—that line will always go up—that it can't really integrate the notion that actions we take today may entirely foreclosure future generations from enjoying certain benefits or goods

but Playtime and Trafic are extremely design-skeptical films! I don't think Tati would be the least bit surprised at designer modernism overtaking the world without achieving its purported goals
anandimish.bsky.social
Lots to ponder upon here. I’d add my two bits: once upon a time there were design-centric movies like Jacques Tatti’s and I’m sure also similarly obsessed literature. Now in books and movies what we have is a parody of all forms of design and architecture in life.

Seattle has a Republican mayor
ericacbarnett.bsky.social
Harrell says he targeted drug dealers at 12th and Jackson, seizing enough drugs to kill everyone in Seattle twice. Clap clap clap. Now he's talking about his faith, removing 80% of the encampments in Seattle, going "upstream," and how "we treat them" (people who use drugs in public) (we don't)

congratulations to the folks at the Oslo Freedom Forum for the tireless lobbying work they must have done to get this Nobel Peace Prize result

It's literally all projection, exhibit one million
Excerpt from NY Mag piece:

Noem could be warm and friendly only to turn it off moments later. Once, a former staffer recalled, a supporter brought Noem flowers, which Noem pretended to love but then had a staffer throw in the trash as soon as her constituent left. “She was rolling her eyes and said, ‘Ugh, I can’t stand these people,’” she said. “It made me wonder whether she was bad-mouthing me behind my back.”

Over 40% of corn grown in Indiana is used to make ethanol that cars burn. One acre of corn yields about 16,500 vehicle-miles per year of ethanol, which sounds high until you realize that one acre of solar yields about 2,700,000 vehicle-miles per year: 16,000% more driving for a given plot of land.

I haven't rewatched the whole thing, but from what I recall, Wolf Blizter gets most of his points by running the board in the D.C. Sports category and strikes out pretty much everywhere else

A Greek millionaire who went to Cambridge couldn't translate "The Last Supper" from Italian to English. "It's something like the final something."

alright, I was misremembering it somewhat. Blitzer is actually in the lead until the end, and Stone rockets to a commanding lead in Final Jeopardy. Huffington was never competitive. (Blitzer answered the question below with "David," lol)
The final scores in a Jeopardy match between Wolf Blitzer, Arianna Huffington, and Oliver Stone. Blitzer is at $4100, Huffington at $300, and Stone at $15,000. The Final Jeopardy question: "The Italian name of this 15th Century masterpiece is 'L'ultima cena'"

the actual episode doesn't seem to be on YouTube anymore, but there's still a video titled "45 grams of fat! - Fat stopper ad from Oliver Stone's Jeopardy show appearance." It's real, it happened. I saw it. Oliver Stone appears to be stoned the whole game www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAKN...

What makes this funnier is that it's not the only time Wolf Blitzer has been completely embarrassed at Celebrity Jeopardy. Oliver Stone wiped the floor with him, in a match where he couldn't even keep up with Arianna Huffington. he's a real life SNL Celebrity Jeopardy character

This one highway is projected to cost 85% of what CA has spent on high-speed rail over 15 years and hundreds of miles. If we can afford this, we can afford high-speed rail.

The entire proposed Highway 37 Solano-Marin super bridge is estimated to cost $11 billion, all to replace an existing road between a couple of suburbs. And it's proposed at 114 feet wide.

For comparison, the Golden Gate Bridge is 90 feet wide.

Caltrans has released a cross section for the ultimate (raised viaduct) version of SR-37.

Now maybe I'm just being paranoid, but if you were building a road that you planned to keep at 4 lanes wide, I don't think it would look like this.

“One of the chants that has become ubiquitous at these protests at Broadview is, ‘Love your neighbor, love your God, save your soul and quit your job,’” said Black, who pastors at the First Presbyterian Church of Chicago. “Everybody chants that.” ⚓️

Wanna learn more about the pastor in this photo?

I talked to him yesterday.

He's currently part of a lawsuit against DHS, in part due to this exact moment: religionnews.com/2025/10/07/i...
