I'm honored to join the BikeLoud board and help advocate for cycling as a daily transportation around Portland.

More BikeLoud new & returning Board members just re/elected:

photo & statement from Mike Perham: Vision and priorities for BikeLoud:
I’d like to see the greenways made local access only for cars, with plazas allowing commercial, dense single stair housing and hardscape modal filters every few blocks. I’d like to see the Green Loop and the 40 Mile Loop furthered/improved. I’d like to see the state invest in regional bike tourism like the Salmonberry Trail and HCRH Trail between Troutdale and Hood River. Without safe infrastructure for bikes, we won’t see significant mode shift.

Since I don’t have a lot of context or history with BikeLoud’s past advocacy efforts, I’m not sure how it needs to change yet but I want to learn!

Experience, skills, and perspective:
My passion is policy reform around small scale housing development and transportation. Dense housing and amenities is the lever which we use to overcome car dependency but we have to legalize it first!

Other volunteer work and leadership roles:
I’ve volunteered with FB4K.org and got my LCI from the League of American Bicyclists. I’ve invested in and own a minority share in BikePortland.org and the Portland Mercury because I believe media is critical to providing sunlight on questionable policy decisions by our government agencies.

What else BikeLoud members should know:
You’re never too old to try something new. I recently took up mountain biking and some of those blue lines are terrifying to an old, slow guy like me but I regret nothing.
photo and statement from Julian Dunn: Vision and priorities for BikeLoud:
I believe that cycling in Portland is on the cusp of a renaissance. Choosing your mode of transportation is one small but significant way in which individuals can push back against the dominant narrative of how they should be living their lives, particularly in the current political climate where it feels like we are powerless. However, politics and activism are most powerful when practiced locally: we have the opportunity as cyclists to take advantage of the new form of city government to guide our elected leaders and bureaucrats to focus on new priorities, ones that benefit all Portlanders. For BikeLoud specifically, this means sweating the small stuff: ensuring that cyclists' interests are represented in any and all forums where transportation issues might be discussed, encouraging the city to do more tactical urbanism rather than focusing only on enormous "big dig" projects, and simply being present in the community (events, outreach, etc.) to encourage more people to regard cycling as a natural mode of transportation, rather than an outlier.

Experience, skills, and perspective:
I have been a product management executive for about five years, and a product manager (PM) in software before that. The profession requires a lot of diplomacy, negotiation, tact, while also being a clear communicator especially about goals and their measures. I believe my experience dealing with often challenging personalities and ability to vary my communication style to the moment can be a positive asset to BikeLoud.

>20 years ago I was also the executive director of a non-profit internet service provider in Toronto, as well as the founder of another non-profit (in server co-location), so I have some experience with non-profit governance although it comes from a different jurisdiction (Ontario) and in a different field.

Other volunteer work and leadership roles:
I have been a volunteer with CASH Oregon for… photo and statement from Cathy Tuttle: Vision and priorities for BikeLoud:
Putting Portland decision makers -- Mayor, Council, and regional government & business leaders -- back on track for supporting a system that allows 25% of all trips by bike in the next decade. Our climate future depends on it!

Experience, skills, and perspective:
Planning skills. Non-profit management.

Other volunteer work and leadership roles:
I'm currently on the Board of BikeLoud and run its Bluesky social media channel. I also serve on the national board of America Walks, and the board of Seattle Neighborhood Greenways (a nonprofit group similar to BikeLoud) that I founded in 2014.

What else BikeLoud members should know:
I live in the Netherlands. I show up for on-line board meetings, and I work remotely on board activities and Bluesky social media. Being on the BikeLoud Board keeps me closely plugged into our operations.
photo and statement from Chris Dearth: Vision and priorities for BikeLoud:
Lobbying the City to dedicate resources and staff to make Portland more cycle-friendly.

Experience, skills, and perspective:
I worked my entire career in the political and environmental world. I was legislative director and environmental projects manager for Governor Kitzhaber so I became very familiar with state government and policy. Later, I was the sustainability manager for Portland Planning Bureau so I learned much about how the City government works. Finally, I was renewable energy project manager so I'm knowledgeable about energy policy and non-profit management.

Other volunteer work and leadership roles:
Formerly board member of the Oregon League of Conservation Voters and Salmon Safe. Now active with Mazamas and Friends of Crater Lake (ride the rim!)

What else BikeLoud members should know:
I have been a passionate cyclist all my adult life. I cycled to work daily when I worked downtown. And I have cycled in many parts of the world, including Cuba, Iceland, most of Europe.

my latest investigation for @consumerreports.org is based on months of reporting and 60+ lab tests of leading protein supplements

we found that most protein powders and shakes have more lead in one serving than our experts say is safe to have in a day (🧵)

One thing I haven’t seen reported about the ICE building protest: they have 10-20 costumes on a rack that anyone is free to use. Put it on, inflate it and protest!

For our third installment of “Harrell's Big Business Backers,” we present Christopher Larson, a retired Microsoft executive who forked over $50K to Harrell’s campaign. What's he buying? Lower taxes for wealthy folks like him.

anyway I am not an energy analyst and but punching holes in the earth to pull up liquids and moving it in ships or pipelines amongst continents to then boil it and again move it in trucks or pipelines to burn it is a really dumb way to move a car… never mind the horror show of CO2 emissions

The best thing to do for housing affordability is one that costs us nothing. Allow 4 story 8 plex stacked flats citywide in Seattle and other various King County 2nd tier cities and let people build without a bunch of rules and stipulations

Really happy to see the Council improving our parks amenities.

I will note it requires a truck/trailer and parking spot. No tricycles. I also worry they'll have gas generators running all day unless PPR provides utility hookups.

Great news from Portland Parks. They've made it easier and cheaper for mobile vendors to set up at local parks!

Food trucks & other vendors make public spaces sticky & build community.

Hope this gives momentum to @councilorgreen.bsky.social hot dog ordinance. www.portland.gov/parks/news/2...

A growing economic debacle. It does not have to be this way. Wise and visionary public policy can channel migration into lawful, orderly pathways.

Urban cul-de-sacs are a cheap, immediate way to calm down side streets. Cars can reach any address, but not cut through. Foot traffic instead good for business.
