there are 12 metrolink/arrow stations & five Amtrak stations (one is co-located w Metrolink) right now in San Bernardino county

density is nice, but density isn't strictly necessary bc it's also possible to improve safety of the existing system w/o actually banning/removing cars. obviously, that would be great, but it's also a distraction.
menorman.bsky.social
yea, exact same thing i came to point out. sb county does in fact have 16 "pax rail stations," so it should apply out here. not that it would REALLY matter tho since developing almost certainly isn't going to pencil & there are a lot of low-resource communities that would be exempted until 2031.

yes, there's a well-known essay from the 1970s and i've seen plenty of academic papers on the topic too

i would note that the current metrolink system delivers more service now than several of these longer pe lines did in their heyday

"You want European style trams in Southern California?
Well, where do you want them?"

This map works for me. :)

menorman.bsky.social
actually no, i would prefer european-style regional rail over european-style trams.

the most infuriating/ironic part of this system is that even tho it is ostensibly built for driver efficiency & convenience, it doesn't even actually deliver that.

And a new Missed Connection is born! The new Hennepin Ave bike lane ends about 300 feet away from the Bryant Ave bike bridge.

An example of how a missed connection is a better problem to have than the alternative (no excellent bike infrastructure to have gaps in).
wedge.live
We are linking up the new Hennepin Ave bike lane directly with the Bryant Ave bridge over Lyndale. No turning on to Franklin required.

Question for the handy folks, is there any decent interior paint that isn't filled with polymers?

The Netherlands has basically eliminated the train station part of stations.

This is the main station for Houten (pop. 50k). It's just a bike lane and wide sidewalk under a viaduct.

places where ppl live/work/play shouldn't have to compete w motor vehs trying to go long distances fast. if there's a need for that type of travel, then it should happen on infrastructure specifically built for it e.g. freeways.
menorman.bsky.social
is that the official urban arrow pannier? theirs might fit better/properly...
menorman.bsky.social
that's nice, but this intersection design is also used at intersections w/o signals at all

A reminder to all cities that infrastructure type is a choice.

Before (2012) / After (2025) Rue le Vau, Paris 20. The change here is so radical that perceiving the photos as aligned is difficult (see the orange building and the trees on the left). In 2024, this section was converted into a school street with a bike lane running through the greenery.

I realize this is a fundamental inflection point of the old guard dems and the new. As much as new guard wants to eat the rich, they don't actually have disdain for the rich and wouldn't actually refuse to fix a bus line on the off chance a rich person might use it.

Lower income New Yorkers are more likely to ride the bus s. Also the house he used to live in before he split with Sandra Lee is worth 1.8 million dollars (third link) and had five bedrooms and six bathrooms and at 5,000 sqft meets the historical definition of a mansion
.
@ZohranKMamdani
’s “plan” provides no relief for working families who take the subway, and unnecessary benefits to wealthy New Yorkers who take the bus and can afford the fare.

I focus on working families, while
@ZohranKMamdani
 the mansion boy focuses on helping the rich.

they're trying to goad another country into a situation where they try to protect their citizens from this sort of nonsense & thus create a "reason" to declare war on that country

If I am killed by a driver, the people I love will feel the same anguish regardless of said driver‘s intent. Motonormativity stops us from accurately assessing the material impact of the crime.
maustermuhle.bsky.social
I remember talking to a former law enforcement official who told me that judges and juries can be hesitant to impose charges that could send drivers to prison, largely because those judges and juries are drivers too and worry that an "accident" could lead to prison time.

gotta love the brainworms that get you to "congestion pricing unfairly targets the working class" and "free bus fare unfairly benefits the capital class"
