The EPA and American Lung Assn. don't agree: are vehicle emissions worse near highways or near slower streets? And since there's so much disagreement, why would we summarily reject a highway-to-boulevard conversion without critical studies and modeling? (Blog post from 2017, updated 2023.)
Highway Air Pollution and Your Health: Six Things You Need To Know
Labor Day weekend is a prime time for vacations, which means many people will be traveling by car in the coming days. While everyone loves a good road trip, pollution near highways can have serious he

Meet Portland Port Commission President Katy Coba—the woman telling Kristi Noem and DHS to take their propaganda elsewhere. Portland Airport refused to air Noem’s blame-Democrats video. That’s what defending democracy looks like. Give her the credit she deserves.

Oh, now I'd like that, too.

But we have NFRLD or whatever that group is that fights arenas bc of parking and traffic but wouldn't be caught dead on the 63. And SOS and their Summit parking protection crusade. And don't we still have some Jane and Tom groups fighting literally *everything* from their perches on the periphery?

Oh! And unless you are putting your laundry on an above ground level, install a laundry chute from the bedroom level directly above your basement laundry basket.

And how about a mudroom with a walk-in shower for the puppies' paws?

Yes, however academics have been studying degrowth for some time and we have never even considered replacing our Ponzi scheme, go-go-growth, rather malignant economy with economic sustainability, for instance. There are growing models for handling this gracefully in ways that make everyone happier.

And it's pretty clear that we have a problem welcoming already alive people to Minnesota, at least on the housing front. My neighborhood is having a meeting tonight to try to stop new multi-unit buildings.

My problem with Strib writer Evan Ramstad's fear of population stagnation in Minnesota is that healthy, happy, educated women choose to have smaller families. Despite what pro-natalists say, women are not breeding stock for corporate profit.

Has anyone pointed out - on the Tom Homan $50,000 thing - that legit payments in business are not made in cash? Especially for amounts like that? Since it sounds like tax evasion 101. Gonna send him a 1099 for that, eh?

Wow. First Paris, now London, cities which were utter roadway disasters in the 1970s. Between constant near-death pedestrian experiences and stepping around Parisian dog poop, it's wonderful these cities have transformed their sidewalks, streets and themselves.

My 94-year-old mother gets very upset when she hear Representative Emmer talking about her this way.
atrupar.com
Emmer: "We call it the 'Hate America' rally because you'll see the hate for America all over this thing when they show up. The rumor is that they can't end this shutdown because this small but very violent and vocal group is the only one that's happy about this."

The most backward thing about Minnesota is that we let outstate/suburban conservatives control city safety and infrastructure. So we'll get a big new stinky, loud I-94 thru MSP, no gun control, and a net drain on our tax contributions to keep rural communities (and their roads) solvent.

Saint Paul, y'all.
mayorcarter.bsky.social
We treat every non-fatal shooting in Saint Paul with the same urgency as a homicide. We’re solving more cases, cutting crime by double digits, and producing a record-low homicide rate—proving this action-driven approach creates safer outcomes.
St. Paul solved more crimes, had drastically fewer homicides in 2025
A remarkable shift is under way in St. Paul. The city is on track for a 70 percent drop in homicides by the end of 2025. And they’re solving more than 70 percent of crimes.

The negative environmental impact of AI use alone is enough to never use them. Please stop using AI to generate your images or anything else. We already can't opt out of their use entirely.

Nonprofits and nonprofit business associations generally avoid bringing up unusually beneficial funding relationships rife with conflicts, but if ever there were a time to review city ordinances and operations related to this org, that time is several decades ago. Are there any reporters left?

Maybe the people who fund their conservative PAC contributions could redirect their cash to the Aquatennial. After all, it was established by the Downtown Council's precursor org to distract the working classes from rebelling against local businesses and their poor treatment of laborers.

Ooh can TDM modeling reliably predict how, say, adding highway lanes or increasing speeds directly increases overall driving? Recommendation: "Implement a model suitability checklist to evaluate whether regional TDMs can reliably
support project-level tasks, including induced VMT analysis."

Autonomous and electric vehicle promoters consistently delude themselves into thinking their mild facelift on the status quo is some kind of revolution.

Meanwhile, e-bikes outsell e-cars and one single city bike share program is lapping all the Autonomous Vehicles on earth.

Steady as she goes.

"Though robotaxis have notched up impressive growth, they look ploddingly pedestrian compared with far zippier pedal-powered rivals. [Waymo] proudly proclaims that its cars do around 250k trips a week. Yet in NYC alone that number of trips is made every three days using the city’s bikeshare scheme."
