Saimaa ringed seals have lived landlocked in Lake Saimaa, Finland, for the last 10,000 years. A study finds the seals likely represent a distinct species from other Arctic ringed seals and have been evolutionarily isolated for 60,000 years. In PNAS: www.pnas.org/doi/abs/10.1...

Natural disturbances are often invoked as an argument against creating new forest reserves. But are reserves more affected by disturbances than managed forests? For C Europe the answer is no, in fact reserves have lower disturbance rate & severity than managed forests! doi.org/10.1111/1365...

We studied how traits & eco. specialisations of forest birds species 🦉 have affected their abundances and distributions in Europe over the last 40 yrs.

Among others, we found a significant 📉 of boreal species, especially the ones related to mixed forests. 🌳🌲
