When I started my PhD, I thought we were the only crazy ecologists out there. Why? Because we transplanted 1m² alpine communities downslope to study climate change effects. Imagine thousands of plants and tons of soil flying over the French Alps 😅

I'm happy to announce the going live of the Swiss Natural History Collections portal swissnatcoll.ch, a project, I had the pleasure to contribute to over the past few years. It's hosted by @gbif.org and provides open access to biological & paleontological specimen data.

Are you involved in ecological forecasting in Europe?
We’re mapping forecasting applications across the continent — from SDMs to observatories with predictive potential.
Our goal: make EU forecasting more connected and identify both immediate and long-term forecasting potential.

Ecologists! Give me ideas where to publish a registered report on plant-microclimate experiments :-) It is hard to find OA journals that are society-owned and read by ecologists ☘️💚🌿💚🍃

How to not be swamped by your microclimate data?

The rise of microclimate data may have opened Pandora’s box. Gone are the days of simple bioclimatic variables — now heads spin trying to summarize these timeseries.

How to not be swamped by your microclimate data
Microclimate data are finally finding their way more routineously into ecological models – and rightly so. Hooray for that! The growing availability of in-situ measurements is helping us brid…

Hosted by the European Ecological Forecasting Initiative (EEFI) @ecoforecast.bsky.social

If you create and submit a relevant model, we’ll be thrilled to invite you as a co-author on our upcoming synthesis paper!

You’ll get access to our biodiversity dataset — complete with environmental variables — and the chance to build your own predictive model using the same inputs. Your model will then be evaluated against ours using forecasting skill scores and other performance metrics to see how well it performs.
🧊 Did your model freeze in time? Let’s bring it back to life!
Join our hands-on workshop “Building Near-Term Iterative Forecasting Workflows” at #TIBS2026 – Aarhus, 6 Jan 2026 🌍
We’ll explore how to turn static predictions into dynamic, self-updating forecasts. @paniw.bsky.social
