After several years of hard work two important papers from Berchtesgaden NP are finally out: 1) effects of microclimate on biodiversity change with macroclimate along elevation, but taxon specific - led by @lisageres.bsky.social doi: 10.1002/ecog.07984 with @rupertseidl.bsky.social and many more

Probably less/no salvage logging. We controlled for species composition. There was no planned harvest included, only unplanned in response to or natural disturbances directly.

Natural disturbances are often invoked as an argument against creating new forest reserves. But are reserves more affected by disturbances than managed forests? For C Europe the answer is no, in fact reserves have lower disturbance rate & severity than managed forests! doi.org/10.1111/1365...

$A drone capture of a smallholder farming landscape. Overlaid are squares of the size of typical optical satellite missions. Openly accessible data (e.g. Landsat or Sentinel-2) is often not sufficient to capture the landscape complexity in full detail, for example when trying to delineate individual fields. Here, one Landsat pixel contains fractions of multiple fields. Commercial data come at higher spatial resolution, offering potential to discriminate indivudual landscape components.$

Another example of how our European forest disturbance data can be integrated in conservation research: colleagues from @au.dk (Aarhus Uni) mapped high conservation value forests in Denmark and analysed the rates of disturbance therein (very low!):

In a new paper, Anne Graser from University of Göttingen @consbiogoe.bsky.social used our European disturbance map to understand disturbance and post-disturbance management impact on bird communities in Central Europe: doi.org/10.1111/1365...

Predicted density of 37 bird species modelled via community distance sampling for years since disturbance. Red-listed species are shown with a red-bordered header box. Coloured header boxes indicated the habitat affiliation: Green: forest, yellow: farmland/open land, white: several.
