NEW VIDEO! FINALLY! Beast Wars Is Shakespeare: The Value of Garbage Media

I truly hope this one was worth the wait, because I've never made something so huge. Massive thanks to Dr. Drew Lichtenberg for sitting down with me for this one. youtu.be/8y_KsFaHRQk?...

do NOT make jokes about my best, personal friend capitalism, or I WILL turn on all caps!!!
I'm so sick of people ragging on 'capitalism'

one; its a free market, not a religion, two; its not perfect we all know it, everyone older than three knows it. Yet what else would provide realistic incentives to produce as much as it has? Not Marxism certainly, that thing which causes idea to die on a vine, then uproots the vine to put up a block of gray depressing housing. We would have much more out of Russia post world war II if they hadn't tried and then failed system. As all fail to adopt a system with one big government trying despite to process information on the order of a thousand, million lesser actors all making choices based to. Not to even broch the topic of how to create incentives in a society which actively punishes the pursuit of a better

life.

You would not be here on the internet making video essays or commenting on comments if marxism could EVER function in the real world. IT DOES NOT UNDERSTAND HUMAN NATURE.

I have to admit, this never made sense to me

If I buy a console, I want it to have games that are fun to play and the console runs well

I could give two shits if you can play the game somewhere else, too

giving the ps5 shit for not having enough exclusives will perpetually baffle me

giving my dog lots of scritches and reminding him to "make good decisions" before I head off to work when he's one of the handful I've personally made in the past 10 years: 😐

but like...if it made sense, it wouldn't need explanation

Maybe there's some supervillain origin story. Something happened to Stephen Miller when he was a kid that made him a racist POS

but also...the sanity of the plan is of no consquence

what matters...is that he can do it

I can't help but feel like the desire for sympathetic villains comes in part from a desire to understand why real life villains are the way they are. Why there are powerful people, unsatisfied with unfathomable amounts of wealth and freedom, who insist on hurting the poorest and most vulnerable
lordravenscraft.bsky.social
there's a bit I have never forgotten in the first Captain America movie:

"[The Red Skull] believes he walks in the footsteps of the gods."
"You do realize that's nuts, dontcha?"
"The sanity of the plan is of no consequence"
"And why is that?"
"𝘉𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘥𝘰 𝘪𝘵."

I think about this a lot...
ghaspey.bsky.social
I'll say it: I think its rly annoying and frankly amateurish that writers are constantly told their villains must be understandable or have sympathetic motivation to be interesting or realistic when all our big villains irl are in fact rich, stupid, selfish, trickster dillweeds and always have been

embarrassingly spent way too much time trying to figure out if New Breads was a game or a show
lordravenscraft.bsky.social
I love the game but yeah I don't know if it needs to be a multiverse! lol

i legit felt my spine tense up before i read the context here

this person met someone while drinking at a bar on Friday

and a robot said the best time to see if they're still horny for him is when they're actively trying to get back to work on Monday morning

the fact this wasn't an immediate red flag is why this guy is struggling

A few weeks late (thanks work) but I wanted to throw out a recommendation for @lordravenscraft.bsky.social’s exegesis on Beast Wars. Eric’s crafted a compelling and interesting video essay on how a toy commercial (and trash media) can grow beyond that into art. Check it out. Good stuff

I sometimes read old gaming magazines and stumbled upon this "babe of the year" section from Playstation: The Official Magazine.

If I was the editor I would have gently suggested this writer be put down like a rabid dog

there was a small startup that had a novel approach to music curation: humans do it

the novel tech component was that it would present appropriate playlists for moods or time of day, but humans chose the music

it was called Songza, Google bought it, then retired the feature

now we get this shit
lordravenscraft.bsky.social
At this point, most of my conflicting feelings about it are so old that I need to finish my rewatch before I decide, but already there's so much cool shit here....but also so many weird choices? I dunnnoooo

they do eventually introduce a few bad guy characters but (skipping the part where they end up being old characters again) they're not all that interesting. one is a quiet brooding type and one is a dumb, one-word sentences type

they fit their designs but they're just not...interesting
lordravenscraft.bsky.social
in Beast Wars, both factions had a minimum of five, distinct characters with vibrant personalities

by the beginning of Beast Machines, the Maximals are down to four, and Megatron has...himself

there's just not as much room for dynamic character interactions
lordravenscraft.bsky.social
I think a big part of the reason Beast Machines struggles to land as hard as its predecessor is how absolutely paltry the cast is compared to Beast Wars

in the first few episodes, not only are many characters removed, but no new characters are introduced until...this guy. a diagnostic drone
