Thanks for the art share Davis!
Hi, I'm Liv, a woodcut printmaker and finalist for the Artist World Fantasy Award this year. All of my 2D art is sketched, hand-carved in wood, then inked and printed on my etching press. Sometimes I add color with watercolors, or gilding. #art #woodcut #printmaking
Vertical rectangular black ink woodcut print on cream colored paper. A lumpy humanoid figure is playing a flute perched upon a black rock. Bog plants grow around it and a black crescent moon is in the upper right corner. The creature has only 3 thick toes and fingers, no eyes, and the face terminates in tentacles around where the mouth must be. A vertical rectangular black ink woodcut on cream colored paper. A thick black border is filled with strange flora and fauna. The central scene is a goat-headed and footed figure cradling a monstrous infant. Both have gold halos behind their heads, and black tentacles emerge behind them. Two crustacean-like monsters perch on the cloud flanking them. The print is colored with watercolor, in greens, reds, orange, yellow, and purple. A vertical black ink woodcut print on off-white paper. This piece is in a style reminiscent of post-colonial Aztec manuscripts. A dog-like humanoid being holds a seated naked human in one hand, gestures with the other, and a florish emerges from its mouth, indicating speach. In the margins are cut up snakes, a scorpion, foot symbols, and two skulls flanking a moon symbol. A vertical rectangular black ink woodcut print on cream colored paper. The head of a lion shaped like a sun with many rays floats inside a stoppered bottle. Vines cradle the bottom of the round flask, and wings emerge near the neck of the vessel.

At this point I trust Sam Altman as far as I can throw him. I’ve never had the opportunity to throw him, but I doubt that is any distance at all.

What an unsurprising decision by corporations that desperately need to make money with AI. If every other company with a chatbot isn't already doing this, then expect them to be following Meta's lead soon. The chatbot is not your friend; it's a corporate listening device. www.ft.com/content/22f7...

Meta will use conversations people have with its chatbots to personalise advertising and content across its platforms, in a sign of how tech companies plan to make money from artificial intelligence.

The owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp on Wednesday said it would use the content of chats with its Meta AI to create advertising recommendations across its suite of apps.

“People will already expect that their Meta AI interactions are being used for these personalisation purposes,” said Christy Harris, privacy and data policy manager at Meta.

My most unhinged(?) take:

This is not just 70s nostalgia

I think we should go back to glass bottles & jars for packaging ALL pre-prepared food & drink.

Glass is near-infinitely recyclable and the improvement for both human health and the health of the environment would be significant.

Ha! At least we're not alone. There was a guy leaving when I arrived, and another lady arrived as I was departing. Hopefully the weather was at least decent for your walk? It was gorgeous here today, though a bit windy.

Please remember that the disgust people have over Christopher Columbus is not based on some modern, 21st century “woke” ideology, but rather on contemporaneous accounts of atrocities that make many modern genocides appear quaint in comparison.

Below, are the accounts of Bartlomé de las Casas.
But too many of the slaves died in captivity. And so Columbus, desperate to pay back dividends to those who had in-vested, had to make good his promise to fill the ships with gold. In the province of Cicao on Haiti, where he and his men imagined huge gold fields to exist, they ordered all persons fourteen years or older to collect a certain quantity of gold every three months. When they brought it, they were given copper tokens to hang around their necks. Indians found without a copper token had their hands cut off and bled to death.
The Indians had been given an impossible task. The only gold around was bits of dust garnered from the streams. So they fled, were hunted down with dogs, and were killed. After each six or eight months' work in the mines, which was the time required of each crew to dig enough gold for melting, up to a third of the men died.
While the men were sent many miles away to the mines, the wives remained to work the soil, forced into the excruciating job of digging and making thousands of hills for cassava plants.
Thus husbands and wives were together only once every eight or ten months and when they met they were so exhausted and depressed on both sides... they ceased to pro-create. As for the newly born, they died early because their mothers, overworked and fam-ished, had no milk to nurse them, and for this reason, while I was in Cuba, 7000 children died in three months. Some mothers even drowned their babies from sheer desper-ation.... In this way, husbands died in the mines, wives died at work, and children died from lack of milk ... and in a short time this land which was so great, so powerful and fer-tile... was depopulated... My eyes have seen these acts so foreign to human nature, and now I tremble as I write....

Love how I'm able to be aware today is a federal holiday, but still run out the door at 4:30 to mail an order before the post office closes at 5pm. (The post office, of course, never opened today.)

Reading quietly to yourself is a fairly new thing & at one time was considered selfish. Books were originally meant to be read aloud.

Listening to an audiobook is "real" reading, and in many cases it's a better way to parse text. Both because some texts beg to be experienced aloud, and because in many cases audiobook readers can get more out of the text that way. (And I'm not even talking about accessibility!)

If you see this, post a monster!

Here's an old watercolor of a feisty little snapdragon.
A watercolor illustration of what appears at first to be a relatively normal snapdragon flower, but closer inspection reveals that it is actually a creature with the flowers forming multiple heads, and some of the leaves and roots becoming limbs and tails.

This two-parter below is exactly why it's hard to make clothes in the United States.

Let's look at how much it costs to produce a button-up shirt in the US. 🧵
Someone on Twitter replies to me: "meh. buy american or stfu."

Two hours later, in a separate thread, the write: "$30 for a single button-up is ridiculous unless it is decent quality silk."
