Reintroduction now that we're all determined to move here: I'm a playwright & theatre critic. I'd love to find more theatre nerds here!

Big fan of Twin Peaks, Star Trek and film/TV in general.

Recently holidayed in Canada with a side quest to Bangor, reigniting my love of Stephen King.

More and more Australians are seeing through the spin, and working out that Australia being a US base for B52 bombers, nuclear submarines, marines and spy hubs is making us less safe. Much less safe.

another long term strategy is for Ds to commit to absolutely destroying MAGA, using emergency powers if necessary.
jonmladd.bsky.social
This is an essential. "Democrats need to beat the Trumpists in elections that we ensure are free" is the best strategy for the next 2-4 years. But it is not a long-term strategy! The only possible long-term strategy is that someone else needs to defeat the Trumpists for control of the Repub Party.

“Win every election” is not a viable strategy for preventing authoritarianism

Yeah, I bet he's favourably disposed to a government that looks willing to bend over at his every whim. It's been proven time and time again that anyone with an actual spine (see Canada) won't get steamrolled. We should stand up to him, not bend the knee.

Gushing, fawning, shallow and ultimately servile. That’s the Albanese government all over in its dealings with Trump and the US.

”I’ve obviously not met president Trump, but everything I hear is that he’s very favourably disposed towards Australia,” Marles said.

I just don't think modern Trek would do them justice. I want to go back to DS9 so badly, but the politics is so tricky in that show/milieu, I'm not sure who I would trust to do it. Certainly not under the new Paramount regime.

They should rest Doctor Who for sixteen years and make another Paul McGann TV Movie in there somewhere.
fubsyshabaroon.bsky.social
Tell me your most unhinged Doctor Who opinion. I mean, if you’re a fan, they’re likely all unhinged anyway.
keithgow.bsky.social
Yeah, totally. There is a slump in Aussies visiting the US but I'm still seeing too many people on my IG feed going there. I visited briefly last year before the election and that still felt fraught. But if they are checking socials, I'm never getting in now.

I miss when movie posters were also art.

The use of AI to marionette a woman whose tortured existence was spent trying to carve her own life and identity out of the space men forced her into is both damningly macabre and a surprisingly perfect encapsulation of the problems with this ghoulish use of technology.

Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves. One for practice and the other one is the "main" grave.

"Charlie should have made a turn as good as mine!"

Trump at the Charlie Kirk memorial event: "They fired sniper rifles at ICE agents, and me. But I made a turn at a good time. I made a turn at a good time. Charlie couldn't believe it, actually."

It's so disingenuous and so irresponsible. Things are supposed to be regulated to protect the vulnerable, not foisted upon everyone because "most of you are going to be okay".

The illustrator and I have worked hard to drop in very obscure references throughout the book. It's going to be lots of fun!

John Oliver is what liberals imagine Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert to be — a genuine critic of America’s systemic failures who stands up for trans people and other marginalized groups, while actually offering real actions and hopeful solutions.
