This is the D'Angelo performance that I've never forgotten. This song was already a huge hit but the way he took it from contemporary R&B to church revival illustrated how connected those idioms are. A revelation for those who didn't know, and an affirmation for those who did.

What D’Angelo said Black Messiah means. It came out at the end of 2014 and it was so needed.
Article (Nolan Feeney; TIME) excerpt reads: “Black Messiah is a hell of a name for an album. It can be misunderstood. Many will think it's about religion. Some will jump to the conclusion that I'm calling myself a Black Messiah. For me, the title is about all of us. It's about the world. It's about an idea we can all aspire to. We should all aspire to be a Black Messiah.

It's about people rising up in Ferguson and in Egypt and in Occupy Wall Street and in every place where a community has had enough and decides to make change happen, D'Angelo writes in a statement about the album It's not about praising one charismatic leader but celebrating thousands of them. Not every song on this album is politically charged (though many are), but calling this album Black Messiah creates a landscape there these songs can live to the fullest. Black Messiah is not one man. It's a feeling that, collectively, we are all that leader.”

“D’Angelo’s First Album in 14 Years Is Finally Here, and It’s Surprisingly Timely” via TIME.

POLITICO: “.. They referred to Black people as monkeys and ‘the watermelon people’ and mused about putting their political opponents in gas chambers. They talked about raping their enemies .. and lauded Republicans who they believed support slavery.

The best way to remember D'Angelo is though his music, but he also appears in Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius) on Hulu. I don't know if it represents his last filmed appearance, but it's worth a watch or re-watch regardless. I'll always regret missing his 2015 appearance at the Showbox.

VOODOO probably has legit claim to best post-Marvin R&B record and BLACK MESSIAH was such a massive deal in my corner of the world. Ludicrous that he’s gone so soon.

Thing about Kier, every appearance gives the impression he’s happily living his best life. Half convinced the man’s got it figured out

Ann makes a real gut-kick observation here. So many artists I love who should've had a Scott Walker/Yoko Ono aged-experimenter coda

D'Angelo was remarkable in so many ways. I'm saddest right now, as a fan, that we won't be getting an eccentric late period from him. His contributions remain inestimable but what he would have made in his 50s and onward, I just know it would have been amazing. RIP

I used to think public mourning for celebs you never met was an unnecessary or odd use of social media, but now I think the collective part of it is one of its more redeemable uses.

I received the Tim Curry memoir today. One thing he didn't talk about a lot during his lifetime was his pop music career. He does talk about it in his book, but only in so much depth. I always wondered about it, so my 2022 Pop Con paper was an examination of the albums through the prism of one song.
"I Do the Rock": A Stimulating Study of the Song That Defined Tim Curry's Pop Career
Here is the text of the paper (and a portion of the slide show) I presented at the Pop Conference on April 23, 2022. Full title:  "I Do ...

We absolutely, positively DO NOT need to learn to live with anyone who wants some of us FUCKING ERASED. Rowling & her money is doing real harm to trans men & women across the world and she needs to fuck off into the sun at her earliest opportunity. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. Into the sun.
tricksyliesmith.bsky.social
oh no. no. absolutely the fuck not. fuck off.
a bullshit statement from Keira knightley saying she was not aware of a boycott against jk Rowling before taking a job on the new audio series and that she's "sorry" and "we're all going to have to figure out how to live together and we've all got very different opinions"
 She can fuck off.

A satisfying takedown of all things Bari, but I especially enjoyed the description of Skydance failson David Ellison as having "resting checking-into-the-White-Lotus face."

Imagine not only sharing this weak anecdote as your origin story -- a colleague didn't like Ben Shapiro, and I had to hear them talk about it! -- but making it your entire identity.

Jesus Christ.

I don’t usually share links to my old podcast cuz it was a lifetime ago, but Kelly’s fave genre film is the little-seen French heist movie Mise á Sac (Pillaged), and I can definitely see some DNA of that in the descriptions of her new film. Can’t wait to see it. maximumfun.org/episodes/swi...
