a spike of large, tubular and bilabiate, white and pink flowers growing not quite upright in light green calyces, with a focus on one flower in particular, facing the viewer. the downward-curving top lip is all white expect for a blush of pink near its tip, strongest on the inside of the corolla. the bottom lip has three very shallow lobes, and seem best defined as sections separated by small folds, with the two on the outside sitting lower & mostly colored white, while the middle lobe is raised, colored pink, and has two rows of hair growing, one left and one right. the middle lobe kinda looks like a tongue in the open mouth of this turtlehead flower. the flower's four stamens can also be seen within the corolla tube, curving up around the perimeter of the interior space like ribs and joining together at the top in a fused mass of fuzzy anthers. don't seem to be able to see it's style, but in the empty calyx below this flower, the long white style is all that remains after its corolla has wilted & fallen away.

a cluster of large white and pink flowers growing in a dense terminal spike. below each of the sessile, light green calyces there are two small leaf bracts; the deep lobes of the calyces appear similar. the flower are tubular & mostly white, only turning pink beyond where the two lips part. the upper lip curves downward and serves as a hood over the stamens and style within; the lower lip forms a raised section along its centerline, constricting the mouth of the flower. blooming flowers occur lower on the spike than the buds above; below the open flowers, there is an empty calyx from a faded flower.

a white turtlehead growing on the bank of a small creek running through a hilly forest. the plant's long stem arches out over the shallow stream, heavy with long, broad, oval leaves with many shallow, blunt teeth. there are a few short branches, each one, like the main stem, terminating in a spike of large, tubular, white and pink flowers.

Happy #RaccoonAwarnessDay! I know they're often referred to as trash pandas, but I get to experience them in their more 'natural' habitat where I live. I love them. They are intelligent, curious and best appreciated from a safe distance. #mammals 🌿
