Community Benefits Agreements
In the face of energy transition projects, communities can deploy community benefits agreements to exert control over their futures.

I don't want to get too hopeful but man, how great would it be if universities actually got a spine and stood up to fascism
Penn was the school that took away a trans swimmer's records and banned trans folks from sports so this is kind of a big deal!
Just received from a colleague: looks like Penn is going to join the universities refusing the extortionary Trump "compact". I do not regret to inform you that we are going to win
screenshot of an email saying:

"To the Penn Community:

For 285 years, Penn has been anchored and guided by continuous self-improvement, using education as a ladder for opportunity, and advancing discoveries that serve our community, our nation, and the world.

Since receiving the Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education on October 1, I have sought input from faculty, alumni, trustees, students, staff and others who care deeply about Penn. The goal was to ensure that our response reflected our values and the perspectives of our broad community.

Earlier today, I informed the U.S. Department of Education that Penn respectfully declines to sign the proposed Compact. As requested, we also provided focused feedback highlighting areas of existing alignment as well as substantive concerns.

At Penn, we are committed to merit-based achievement and accountability. The long-standing partnership between American higher education and the federal government has greatly benefited society and our nation. Shared goals and investment in talent and ideas will turn possibility into progress.

I am grateful to the Penn community for your thoughtful input and for what you bring to our University and our missions every day.

Sincerely,

J. Larry Jameson, MD, PhD

An important message to the people of New York City.

it is again insane to me that people think it’s better to shoot shit into the atmosphere- which has consequences we don’t know about- than stop using fossil fuels, something we already know how to do.
The thing about solar geoengineering is that once you start you cannot stop *ever* unless somehow you have already removed all the multi-billions of tons of carbon emitted since the day you started.

If you stop at the higher CO2 concentration you get virtually instantaneous catastrophic heating.
"If geoengineering works well initially & you see this temperature drop, the tempempation to keep going & extracting fossil fuels will be greater than ever, because it will seem that you have a technologically that can cut off the link between temperature rises & fossil fuel combustion."
Don’t forget about my sandwich

Good luck to people trying to get climate action going while painting fossil fuel dependencies and calls for a just transition as obstructive. There are serious challenges, especially in developing countries and a failure to acknowledge them as real is a sure shot way to help build obstruction
At this point, taxing billionaires out of existence seems like a benefit for them. These man-children need rules and regulations and a bedtime.

tfw your 1,000-word tweets aren't working
I feel like recognizing that BTS is a band makes you far from old :) They have this thing they say that translates into, “I purple you,” which now that I’m typing it out seems ridiculous. But it totally works when they say it!
I started using purple because of BTS 💜
Aw, but not as big of a draw as one Elon Green, if we're honest :)
If you're in Santa Cruz, come to this event next Thurs. Oct. 23rd! If I help with turnout, @itsmccarthy.bsky.social owes me a sandwich, in case you needed added incentive.
Flyer with a greenish background that has a picture of Zohran Mamdani, a sign with a red background and "freeze the rent," in yellow and blue" advertising a talk on Oct. 23rd at 3pm at UCSC
All jokes, aside, this is the point, "Russell’s expectation that those who relate to others as though they are not worthy of respect ought to be treated with the regard that orientation deserves." If you talk about a population like they are less than human, then yes, you should be shamed.

Al Jazeera is doing videos of the Palestinian releases and they're heart wrenching. One man was detained for over a year and was released to find out that Israel had killed his two kids. The youngest was three. Her birthday would've been on Saturday. He'd made a small bracelet for her in prison.
Looks like measles outbreaks are happening across the country. If only there was something that would prevent its spread...

jfc. What are we even doing
All the wrong people are passing. wtf.

If you're able, please consider a donation to the Alaska Community Fund to help people in western Alaska impacted by ex-typhoon Halong even as winter is bearing down. All the money donated goes to the region. Quyana. #Alaska #AlaskaSky

Screen shot of the ACF Western Alaska Disaster Relief 2025 Fund:

"In response to recent severe storms, including Typhoon Halong, that devastated Alaska's western coast, local community organizations and regional partners have come together to establish the Western Alaska Disaster Relief Fund, housed at the Alaska Community Foundation.
Two major storm systems struck western Alaska in rapid succession, bringing record flooding, extreme winds, and extensive damage from Kwigillingok to Kotzebue. Homes have been damaged and destroyed, critical infrastructure compromised, and subsistence resources disrupted. The Western Alaska Disaster Relief Fund will provide support to affected communities for immediate relief, recovery support, and long-term resilience, including disaster preparedness initiatives. Distribution decisions will be guided by advisors including regional leaders and stakeholders, ensuring resources reach affected communities based on locally identified needs.

The Western Alaska Disaster Relief Fund brings together a growing list of local, regional, and statewide partners endorsing the fund, including:

    Association of Village Council Presidents
    Alaska Federation of Natives
    Alaska Native Heritage Center
    Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium
    Bethel Community Services Foundation
    Calista Corporation
    Healthy Alaska Natives Foundation

Also, don't use my post to dunk on workers!! The first paper I wrote was why workers need to be at the center of climate policy! Don't shit on workers!!
If your response to this is "why should we support coal workers," or "tell me who they voted for first," I would urge you to think about what differentiates you from the current regime that favors only the ones they deem worthy. Just transition for all is just transition for ALL.
New coal leases in the Powder River Basin have been paused after the first one had only a bid for 1/10th of a penny. They are trying to blame previous administrations, but the writing is on the wall. We should be supporting coal workers and communities not doing wtf this clown show is doing.
US postpones Wyoming coal lease sale after disappointing Montana auction
