BTW let's appreciate the sheer bathetic comedy of Trump's threats sliding from WE'RE GOING TO BAN ALL CRITICAL SOFTWARE WE WILL BRING YOUR ECONOMY TO A HALT down to WE'LL MAKE OUR OWN COOKING OIL SEE IF WE DON'T.

Don't look now but Trump just freaked out the market again by continuing to escalate the trade war.
I believe that China purposefully not buying our Soybeans, and causing difficulty for our Soybean Farmers, is an Economically Hostile Act. We are considering terminating business with China having to do with Cooking Oil, and other elements of Trade, as retribution. As an example, we can easily produce Cooking Oil ourselves, we don’t need to purchase it from China.

Was at an EIU conference once and they gave out free copies of Malcolm Gladwell’s latest. Saw a guy start reading it at the top of the escalator to the lobby only to then put it in the bin conveniently located at the bottom of the escalator.

If only someone had tried to investigate UKIP & Russian interference 🧐

There’s another timeline where the Guardian supported me, doubled down on the investigation & I look 5 years younger ..

I just don’t talk enough about how @simonlester.com brought IEL folks together and how his business continues to inform us and offer a steady blogging platform for engagement. We need a place to build those long forms and accommodate central rapid discussion. A Goldilocks forum. Hope we get there.

”..trade war is suddenly hotter than it’s been since Mr. Trump’s infamous Liberation Day announcement in April. Mr. Trump retreated from those border taxes after markets staged a meltdown, and investors have thought the worst was over. Maybe not.”

more than a whiff of self-censorship in markets at the moment. No-one wants to call BS on, ya know, everything, for fear of angering the president

Happy to be celebrating the life and work of Professor Donald Shoup today at UCLA. In addition to transforming the way we think about parking, he was a great man and a generous mentor!

I don't understand how you could make a whole movie like this without anybody involved even skimming a couple of wikipedia articles about how any of this stuff works.

@jonobri.com hits the grey elephant in the new city debate - that the vast majority of regional towns and small cities are determined to avoid growing any larger than they currently are.
jonobri.com
No, Australia does not need new cities.

My new essay sets the record straight: we have a lot of cities, but we aren’t using them as well as we could be. To make our cities more successful, we have to open up a lot more land for commercial uses to enable agglomeration.

As a proud Canberran, and being regional New South Welsh by birth, I agree with this.

It's taken a century to build Canberra - a city built to solve a specific problem, not for housing - into a real city. Let's not repeat that.

We need to interrogate the mindset of large towns versus small cities.

2026 is another "fire horse" year. Leo Lewis speculates on the implications for Japanese fertility: www.ft.com/content/ffa1...

There were big dips in births in the previous "fire horse" years of 1906 and 1966, but also some recuperation in the period immediately following.
