You can easily say that descendants of Italian, Irish and Jewish immigrants to America today face radically less levels of systemic discrimination than their ancestors did in the 1800’s without being like “and actually that discrimination never even existed”. Why does this matter?

Because people changed their names in order to deter discrimination. This went on for a good long while. I literally only learned some of my relatives actual first names a few years ago, while I was doing genealogy shit.
