That one, yes… the dude you don’t want to listen to but know you probably should. In 2012 we observed the hierarchical growth of structure. In 2020 we then solved the nonlinear growth of structure. There’re more important things to worry about now.

My super modern regulatory plan is that any entity named for a thing from Tolkien has to publicly explain why Tolkien wouldn’t immediately throw it into Mount Doom

Tolkein continues to resonate. The new bank being set up by Palmer Luckey and backed by Peter Thiel is named Erebor after the “lonely mountain” in The Hobbit. This was also an interesting line in this rpt on the new bank by @tabbykinder.bsky.social www.ft.com/content/202d...

hey here's a legitimately great thread on levels of fucked with respect to budgetary authority/antideficiency.

i'm linking to the end of it because scrolling up is easier than scrolling down and expanding more every couple skeets.

By an entire parsec, the Trump administration has undertaken the most illegal set of budget actions in history. This is why we desperately need guardrails to restrain and go after budget malfeasance from the White House.

This whole damn thread.

I think there are five levels of potential badness here. Once you've decided to violate the ADA, you're only bound by self-imposed limitations. But depending on what the White House is self-imposing, this can range from "BAD" to "The Republic has fallen, pack it in."

It’s important in all this to remember: official press conferences are a minuscule part of the job and exist to present one side and control questioning.

Much reporting, often the best reporting, happens without ever having to flash a press pass

Soliciting information from officials is a journalist's job.

The Pentagon's new press policy would make reporters "stenographers parroting press releases, not watchdogs holding government officials accountable," explains @npr.org's Tom Bowman.

Jewish law & Bible scholarship don't think the word in the 10 Commandments for "steal" is about, like, shoplifting.

Look at eg Genesis 40:15, Exodus 21:16 , Deuteronomy 24:7--

the commandment is not to steal people. Don't kidnap.

Though you shouldn't need the Bible to teach you that. #AbolishICE

my main takeaways from listening to the Supreme Court oral argument today are

-the writing is on the wall for the Voting Rights Act
-the Republican justices are now throwing racist spaghetti at that wall; they'll pass of whatever sticks as the opinion's rationale

The Conservative Justices Have So Many Ideas For How to Kill the Voting Rights Act
The Republican justices already know where they’re going. They just have to figure out which route they’re going to take to get there.
