average horror protagonist: the true horror is worrying that you might be going INSANE!!

me, already insane: fucking bring it, you bitchass ghost

but also EVENTUALLY it will occur to someone other than me that a genuinely mentally ill person, with a lot of experience dismissing their own intrusive thoughts/ delusions/ hallucinations, would make a GREAT horror protagonist.

I'm working on a new thing and a major character is part sea-monster coded, if that counts.

I'm too early in for much detail but lets just say he's nearly 8 feet tall, has pale greyish skin with an iridescent sheen and hints of scales in the right light, sharky eyes, and long blue-black hair. Hot.

Also, statistically, most of these characters probably ended up a different gender than they were in the movie

“The UK stands at a crossroads. Are we going to be a nation that respects its human rights obligations, or are we going to abandon them whenever the rightwing press demands it? First immigrants, then trans people – who next, Sir Keir?” goodlaw.social/fs2m

Oct 14th - #Hackers of the world united to overload the Gibson, and prevent the Da Vinci virus from capsizing an oil fleet, designed to distract from "The Plague's" worm stealing $25m.

📽️📅 Hackers (1995)
3 Screenshots from the movie "Hackers" (1995): First, a group of young people is gathered in a subway car, with one reading a paper as another looks on, while a subtitle reads, "Wait a minute. The 14th... that's the same day the worm ends its run." Second, a person with a striking hairstyle and colorful clothing stands in front of a vibrant, patterned backdrop, saying, "Hackers of the world, unite." Third, a person leans out of a car window, passionately shouting, "Hack the planet!"

Hey you--watch some trash. I don't mean corporate by the numbers slop, I mean some honest-to-goodness, lowbrow, shoestring budget trash. Like arthouse cinema, it's good for you.

I like to throw in something bizarre and experimental in the first few chapters to clear out anyone who thinks every difference of opinion is a "plot hole." I mostly do it for myself but I like to think that somewhere out there, a reader I don't like is having a bad time.

you have to kill the devil's advocate in your brain when you're writing, you have to smother the imaginary bad faith reader that lives in your head. Trying to please the voice that tells you the person reading your work is ignorant/malicious is a mind-killer. There are better ways to create cohesion

What if you were trying to rekindle the passion in your relationship but your girlfriend was Pinterest-poisoned
She eats her like ortolan; her face hidden beneath the sheet, where the blessed mother's eyes cannot find her. She swallows the heat and moisture of her, the dark beneath the blankets so ripe with Grace's scent that the space feels like a cavern carved from her body, like Jo is within her. And she might even find pleasure in the thought, were it not for Grace staring at the ceiling beyond the veil, eyes dreamy, and saying, "We should get backyard chickens."

You should care about trans rights just generally, because trans people are people, they have always been here and they always will be.

BUT if you MUST put a cis spin on it, this is where transphobia gets you. It's either bodily autonomy for all of us or none of us.

The right-wing campaign group that helped topple Roe v Wade in the US is now working to roll back abortion laws in the UK, with the help of Nigel Farage.

Its first step? Trying to create a debate around "free speech"

The veneration of Books As Objects misses the point entirely. If you're reading a book, turn the corners down, break the spine, spill soup on it. It's your book, go nuts. A pristine, unread book is a tragedy in a way that a beloved, much-read book that looks like the dog's been at it could never be.

Old time SF might still have the edge over 2020s where blurbs are concerned. I'll take HE KNEW THE MARTIAN LOVE SECRET over LORD OF THE FLIES MEETS ANNE OF GREEN GABLES IN THIS FRIENDS TO ENEMIES FOUND FAMILY ACCIDENTAL WISH ROMANTASY.
