most conservatives are status seekers, of course in a society where it improves your status to be literally hitler they will all instantly jump in that while in a society where that might also hurt your status they will not do that. that doesn’t change anything about them intrinsically, though.

if anything, modern fascism shows that most conservatives are fascists in waiting, look at the US supreme court and tell me how many of the judges where described as classical conservative 10 years ago who have now fully embraced fascism.

like, fascists don’t have logically consistent beliefs to begin with, they can tell you that hitler was a socialist and then say that gas chambers were kinda a good idea though, the idea that this is a big shift because it is a logical leap from before assumes they operate under logical constraints.

the whole “yound republicans weren’t always like this” stuff is a lot of people talking past each other. some people are saying “they fundamentally were always like that” while others are saying “they would have never praised hitler openly 20 years ago!”
these statements are not mutually exclusive
