Gonna remind the whole of Bluesky, again, that journalistic norms of saying “Texas is doing this” and “Texas is doing that”, (when it’s the TX GOP only) cedes an entire population to white supremacy and erases the opposition that also represents Texas and the Texans that would be victimized.

"It won't touch the building."

"It will just be the East Wing facade."

"It will just be the East Wing."

"It will just the whole White House."

(If no-one stops them, why would they stop?)

Mike Johnson has not heard anything about the entire East Wing being demolished and cannot speak to that.

Not to be cringe, but I'm surprised I am emotional seeing the East Wing demolition. My first job in DC was interning and going to meetings there regularly. I learned everything about it while giving guided tours. The beauty of the East Wing is that everyone can go there. It's America's house.

Trump plans to demolish the entire East Wing to build a ballroom… and I thought the National Guard was in DC to protect federal buildings 🤔

Just so you know.

If Trump can tear down the entire East Wing with no oversight or restrictions, he can do the same to the entire White House.

The Obama White House posted a 360 degree tour of the White House that is still up. For folks who never got to see the East Wing before Donald Trump & JD Vance destroyed it, here's a 360 degree view of the East Wing lobby.

TRUMP IN JULY, discussing plans to build a ballroom beside the White House:
“It won’t interfere with the current building. It’ll be near it but not touching it — and pays total respect to the existing building, which I’m the biggest fan of."
THE NEWS TODAY:
Trump is demolishing the entire East Wing.
This is a great idea. I’m gonna do the same.
I am going to be sending angry paper letters to all the donors on the Trump list saying "why did you pay to demolish the historic White House East Wing without taxpayer consent?" not because I think this is the most important thing, but...

Also, we now know that every company on that list would 100% give money to fund atrocities and crimes against humanity if it got them in good with Trump.

I'm planning to act accordingly.

I'm going to compile a list of names and addresses and I will share that list on here once I am done.

Fuck this anti-democratic shit.

Demolishing the East Wing without doing ANY OF THE THINGS associated with it is bad.

Private companies subverting the very concept of democratically responsive action because they paid for it is horrific.

...because I think they need to get fucking pushback that they cannot just fund quasi-governmental actions and get bribery kickbacks for doing so, or they will start doing worse things.

Spectacularly obscure pun in an upcoming novel has now been queried by editors at absolutely every stage, and readers will 100% take it for a typo, but by God I am not letting go of it.

Okay, my obscure background as an erstwhile DC land use lawyer is finally relevant. There are several agencies that oversee any projects at the White House, including the Commission of Fine Arts, the Commission for the Preservation of the White House, the National Park Service, and the National 1/

We respectfully urge the Administration and the National Park Service to pause demolition until plans for the proposed ballroom go through the legally required public review processes, including consultation and review by the National Capital Planning Commission…

The National Trust for Historic Preservation — a nonprofit created by Congress to help preserve historic buildings — also called Tuesday to pause demolition of the East Wing until Trump's project could go through a transparent review.

It's all artisinal handcrafted wood trim and restoration double hung windows too, all probably crafted at significant expense for restorations by the national park service and probably mounted for easy removal for maintenance. But nope just smash it with a backhoe

Seriously it looks like the haphazard jackhammer approach was intentional. Could have scaffolded/tarped and treated the place with respect. I mean, it’s the photo of the year IMO as a visual representation of Trumps complete destruction.

I'm not a West Wing obsessed lib or anything but the more I see pictures of this the more fucked up I think it is. It's like he cut off one of the hands of the Lincoln memorial with an angle grinder so he could add a big gun to it.
