This new piece with @toubiana.bsky.social and Trish Ruebottom in @sciam.bsky.social, explored how Trump’s appeal mirrors the strategies of voyeuristic businesses, like reality TV or social media influencers. 🧵

It's wild how left wingers are often scolded for the most tepid often out of context comments but elected and appointed officials in the GOP can say shit like this and it likely won't get scrutinized.
Leavitt: "The Democrat Party's main constituency is made up of Hamas terrorists, illegal aliens, and violent criminals."

Jeffries: "House Republican leadership hasn't been given permission to talk to Democrats by their boss, Donald Trump. We know that throughout the entire presidency, Republicans in the Congress have chosen to functions like lapdogs of the Trump administration. A wholly owned subsidiary of Trump"

If someone told you, “I’m going to mildly hit you with my car and disable you right now”, would you do anything to prevent it?

So why aren’t you preventing Covid from disabling you by doing the most effective thing you can do to prevent it? Mask.

Trump & Bessent are considering another $20 billion to Argentina in the middle of a government shutdown.

Federal workers are standing in line at food banks.

People are at risk of losing their healthcare.

Food assistance is being cut.

Half of Americans can’t afford a basic standard of living
Bessent says US considers doubling aid to Argentina to $40B
The assistance is aimed at bolstering the country's collapsing currency and calming economic unrest before Oct. 26 midterm elections.

So... Those of us who want to keep taking Covid seriously are dismissed as "anxious". The irony: possible increase in anxiety among OFFSPRING of those infected by Covid. Covid creating an anxious future generation? Just so that WE don't have to be anxious now?

UK Covid Inquiry (paraphrased)

We didn’t think too much about the “science” of health risks to children’s or making schools safer to protect them.. because “politics”- the government was worried about the economy & wanted the schools open
Q- Was there any realisation on your part that this could have profound implications for children?

A - The whole government policy - was about maintaining both the economy and schools to be open. I do not believe that significant weight was attached to scientific advise.

People rightly complain that a lot of TV dramas are "copaganda," but those shows have set some expectations in the general public about how law enforcement is supposed to act. Lean into that.
I need a montage of famous cops in movies and TV shows flashing their badges and announcing their names, followed by a stream of masked ICE guys refusing to give theirs.

The whole "Sport for Development and Peace" shtick is a major political tool for elite sport governance in justifying their current m.o. (insular old-boy networks calling the shots), and for reinforcing it through the creation of ties to political elites.
WTF is the head of FIFA doing at the summit?
FIFA President Gianni Infantino attending Donald Trump’s so-called “Gaza peace summit” in Egypt.

But sure, tell us again how “football and politics don’t mix.”
Absolutely insane.

Bari Weiss is a far right news publisher just made the head of CBS News. CBS News will be gutted even further.

A solemn a deeply felt fuck you to Larry Ellison. Oracle is the worst fucking database out there and everyone hates it. No matter how big a boat you build that will never change. Loser.
Here is some material Bari Weiss published regarding Covid.

So when anyone defends her in any way, what they are saying is that real world victims of medical disinformation don’t matter.
