A myth and/or an outright lie by too many economists and think tanks. #nzpol

Looks like a good time in the news cycle to tackle three big myths 🧵
❌ NZ pension costs are an unsustainable burden ❌
Seriously, no, for lots of reasons.
1. Our current Govt spending on pensions is low compared to most other advanced economies. And... [1/n]
Graph of public pension costs as % of GDP for OECD countries in 2021 (latest data). NZ is lower quartile at around 5.1%. OECD average is 7.8%. Plenty of Euro countries are around 10% or above.

It is also why, IMHO, the Māori seats matter, even though their influence can be occasionally limited. Their job is to call attention to and contest such erasures. #mycurrentthoughts #reckons

The legacy of that decision is precisely why many insist upon the explicit inclusion of Treaty clauses in legislation: to prevent the Crown from ever again claiming that Te Tiriti has no legal standing.

In two days, we mark the 148-year anniversary of Chief Justice Sir Prendergast's declaration that Te Tiriti o Waitangi, having not been incorporated into domestic law, was a 'simple nullity'. Prendergast's ruling was used to justify the theft of vast tracts of Māori land for generations.

While you are all here, just a reminder, 18 years ago to this day, the Police, citing the Terrorism Suppression Act, invaded the homes of whānau across the country, in what the IPCA went on to say ‘unnecessarily frightened and intimidated' people.

Constitutional transformation is already happening, just not in Question Time. I get that pundits have to focus on six MPs, but it's because they can't and won't look at the thousands of daily acts of self-determination that don't require Parliament's permission.

California just banned employers from forcing workers to pay a debt, fee, or penalty to leave their job.

Bosses have increasingly been trapping workers with debts incurred in training and other exploitative fees.

Now that's illegal in the nation's biggest state.

If the government is lacking climate ambition it should get off the couch and get a paper run! #NZPol

The government’s weakened methane reduction target mirrors the approach promoted by industry lobby groups but rejected by the Climate Change Commission.

200+ people have gathered outside Resene's head office in Lower Hutt as the company's workers protest for a living wage. #nzpol

Resene sees itself as a leader in the market but whines, when asked to pay a Living Wage, that it pays the same low wages everyone else in the sector pays. Leadership MIA.

#nzpol This is such a ridiculous attempt by National and ACT to blame so many hospitality business closing down on anything BUT the economy that this govt created. No one can afford to go out or buy a coffee. Those who could bought plane tickets to Aussie instead.🤬

My MiL managed as do friends on and off here that aren’t grandmas. I did a bit when my kids were little but I’ve definitely upped my output since I’ve been a Baba. Prolific would be a fair description. It’s been lovely to see the knits being passed on to younger kids in their friendship circles too.

This fascination with "Māori" parliamentary politics reveals how limited mainstream analysis is. Te Pāti Māori is one tactical engagement with one part of the Crown's apparatus, not the centre of Māori political life.

The writing is often on the wall long before people who benefit from the system the most even notice.

The evidence is often there, if you ask the right people. If you feel blindsided, ask yourself why you aren’t in relationship with the canaries in the coal mine.

Mainstream media obsesses over Te Pāti Māori as if Parliament is where rangatiratanga happens. It's not. The real exercise of rangatiratanga is done in Iwi boardrooms managing billions in assets, Hapū asserting authority over whenua me wai, and whānau/whanui making decisions about their future.

That and people looking after themselves rather than working together in solidarity. Kate's comments about this are 🎯.
