Researchers analyzed 102 “just-so” stories shared in online antifeminist spaces. 83% focused on sex differences and rarely acknowledged speculation. The authors call for renewed discussion and reflection on evolutionary hypothesizing.

If one man marries two women, another man must go unmarried, right? No. Demography matters. If sex ratios are skewed towards women, then polygyny can exist alongside universal marriage for men (who want to marry women). If only more people understood demography 😊

Teaching advice please —

I’m deciding if I should replace traditional paper assignments with an alternative now that we are all battling AI generated student papers…

But what is the best alternative?

And sadly, last year (May 26 2024), Kabosu passed away aged 18 years, after a long battle with leukemia and liver disease. Rest in peace, Kabosu. You were a cutie.

In 2023, Kabosu was honored by a monument in her hometown of Sakura, one I visited this summer.

The inscription reads "On Feb 13th, 2010, Kabosu graced in the internet, becoming the world's most beloved meme. She is wholesome, calm and accepting, inspiring her devotees to Do Only Good Everyday"!

davidwlawson.bsky.social
Is all this a good thing, or has the innocent Doge meme now fully corrupted?

I don't know…...

but here is the now very rich Dogemother herself, talking about Kabosu's legacy. www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BAc...

The buyers recently founded "the Cultural Institute of Doge". Their mission "is to use the Doge meme and IP to pursue, propel & proliferate the ethos of D.O.G.E. (Doing Only Good Everyday)"... erm, you can also buy merch and a share of the NFT...and a documentary is on the way!

In 2021, Sato sold a non-fungible token (NFT) version of the original Doge photo and netted a whopping $4,240,000!

The highest price ever paid for an NFT, and the fourth most expensive photo ever sold in the history of the world!

Much wow! So money!

From here, popularity waxes and wanes - but Doge keeps popping up in remixed ways. In 2019, Doge wins an online poll for meme of the decade, beating the Real Housewives "woman yelling at cat" meme.

It's official - dogs are better than cats.

davidwlawson.bsky.social
Things spiral in the following years - not least because Kabosu is co-opted into "Dogecoin", a still popular and at times controversial cryptocurrency…. learn.swyftx.com/altcoins/wha...

davidwlawson.bsky.social
And the cute just keeping coming... I am a fan of this sticker set. Especially the "bread-doge" variant.

davidwlawson.bsky.social
Around 2013, variants of the Doge photo go truly viral, after someone combines Kabosu with sweet internal dialogue in broken English and comic sans font.

Much wow!

davidwlawson.bsky.social
That same year, one of the images was shared on Reddit - the first known linkage of "Doge" to Kabosu... and argued origin point of Kabosu becoming a meme -

"LMBO (laughing my butt off) LOOK @ THIS FUKKEN DOGE".

davidwlawson.bsky.social
Back in 2010, Japanese kindergarten teacher Atsuko Sato posted images of her sweet Shiba Inu, Kabosu on her personal blog...

davidwlawson.bsky.social
Can we all forget the Department of Government Efficiency... but remember Kabosu - who inspired her devotes to "Do Only Good Everyday"... a brief history of one VERY cute dog(e).
